The City of Georgetown is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require assistance in participating at a public meeting due to a disability, as defined under the ADA, reasonable assistance, adaptations, or accommodations will be provided upon request. Please contact the City Secretary’s Office, at least four (4) days prior to the scheduled meeting date, at (512) 930-3652 or City Hall at 113 East 8th Street for additional information; TTY users route through Relay Texas at 711. Regular Session (This Regular session may, at any time, be recessed to convene an Executive Session for any purpose authorized by the Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code 551.) A. Call to Order Chairman Gene Jantzen called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Eight Board members were present, with Board member Beverly Stehle absent, thus constituting a quorum. Also present were Support Staff Liaison Fire Chief John Sullivan, Staff Liaison Office Specialist Linda White, Arlana Bryant, Medical/Health Coordinator, Georgetown Fire Department, and Patrick Lloyd, Community Resources Coordinator, City Library. B. Introduction of current and newly appointed Board member, Dennis Dalrymple – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Mr. Jantzen introduced Mr. Dalrymple to the Commission and gave Mr. Dalrymple a summarization of the direction of the Commission since its beginning in March 2015. Mr. Dalrymple introduced himself to the Commission. Legislative Regular Agenda C. Consideration and possible action to approve the minutes of the meeting held on May 15, 2017. Bernie Farkas moved to approve the minutes from the meeting held on May 15, 2017. Tiffany Enos seconded the motion, which the Board approved unanimously. (8-0) D. Presentation and discussion of the education, resources and programs that the AGE of Central Texas offers through their regional non-profit organization – Lori Hill, CaregiverU Program Associate and Faith Unger, CaregiverU Program Director. AGE of Central Texas is a non-profit tackling the challenges of aging with expert solutions. The Adult Day Health Centers provide a safe, vibrant, social environment for older adults who need support and care during the day. Adult day health care enhances the health and well-being of older adults and those who care for them. AGE of Central Texas has centers in Austin and in Round Rock, and are pursuing the possibility of a future center in Georgetown. Ms. Hill and Ms. Unger explained in more detail the care, resources and education provided not only to the senior participant, but also to their caregivers. Ms. Hill and Ms. Unger fielded questions from the Commission. Page 5 of 14 Commission on Aging July 17, 2017 2 E. Discussing of the Priority Initiatives: Communication, Transportation, Dental Care, Affordable Housing, Mental Health – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Transportation: Dan Bonner and Ginny Hahn. Ginny shared that there will be a Town Hall meeting in Sun City on October 25, 2017. The meeting is being designated as a “Senior Fair” specifically pertaining to senior issues; Patrick Lloyd shared some questions and concerns he has regarding the bus implementation plan and registration of the seniors riding the bus; Mental Health: Ron Brandon stated he will be arranging a meeting with a representative from the Police Department, Fire Chief Sullivan and Gene Jantzen to discuss the main issues the police and fire personnel experience with the aging population throughout the City. Discussion then occurred with Chief Sullivan how best for local residents to become involved with training opportunities provided by the Police and Fire departments so that these trained residents can assist with some preventative aspect of issues occurring among the elderly; Affordable Housing: Virginia Lazenby shared that she would like to see a vendor fair that was more senior based. She also expressed an interest in developing a plan for a Senior Expo Fair during spring 2018, with the possibility of a few speakers speaking in classroom type settings. The Commission responded favorably to pursue this activity. Anyone interested in helping is to contact Virginia; Communication: Tiffany Enos continues to research how best to provide avenues that will reach seniors and their care givers with a variety of information; Legal Aid: Bernard Farkas stated that he feels the senior population has a genuine need of Legal Aid assistance. Mr. Farkas was suggesting that the Commission consider making Legal Aid as an additional Priority Initiative and he would be interested in working with this initiative. Patrick Lloyd, Community Resources Coordinator with the City, has previously shared in his updates with the Commission, that Legal Aid is definitely one of the major needs of senior residents. F. Discussion of future agendas and priorities – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Gene Jantzen will contact another City Councilman member to speak and mentioned trying to schedule the City Manager to speak to the Commission. At the August meeting, Fire Chief Sullivan/Arlana Bryant, Medical/Health Coordinator, will update the Commission of pre-hospital medical services and needs within the community. Arlana Bryant will share in September/October, the Fire Services new role in working with AGE of Central Texas. The Commission expressed their desire to invite the transportation manager to share updates regarding the new bus service as well as inviting an ADA representative to discuss the Commission’s concerns regarding ADA accessibility in newly constructed business buildings. Continue discussions pertaining to the Priority Initiatives during upcoming meetings. Adjournment The next Commission meeting will be Monday, August 21, 2017, at 6:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Facility, 3500 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, Texas.
