ABOUT GEORGETOWN’S DECORATIVE CROSSWALK PROJECT: The purpose of the decorative
crosswalk project is to celebrate cultural identity and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
while connecting and unifying the Cultural District using design, public art, wayfinding, and
artistic programming as a common thread.
These crosswalks will be located within the larger framework of the Downtown Georgetown
Cultural District. The crosswalks are part of the larger programming goal of activating the
Cultural District with arts and cultural events that encourage participants to engage in
programming across the entire district.
Our semi-annual Georgetown Art Strolls in October and April provide visitors and residents of
Georgetown an opportunity to participate in arts and cultural activities that begin on the east
side of the Downtown Georgetown Cultural District at the South Main Arts District and end on
the west side of the Cultural District at the Georgetown City Center where the Shotgun House
and Preserving History Mural are located. One of the goals of the Art Stroll programming is to
present solutions that address barriers to arts and cultural participation, which include
wayfinding techniques as simple as crosswalks that lead people from one side of the street to
the other.
The Georgetown Public Library is designing a library-themed crosswalk for installation in time
for the Spring Art Stroll, to be located on 8th Street in front of the library. Community members
will have the opportunity to view the new library crosswalk during the stroll and thenvote on
their favorite “I Have a Dream” crosswalk proposals for Martin Luther King, Jr. Street.
The following map depicts the Downtown Georgetown Cultural District and the different
components to be connected and unified. Martin Luther King Jr. St. is located between City Hall
and the Georgetown Public Library.
DESIGN GUIDELINES: The dimensions of each crosswalk design should be 6’W x 24’L with two
required 12” white bands on each side of the design to be compliant with the Texas Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The maximum number of colors allowed is 7 colors plus white.
Please keep in mind that vehicular traffic over time will cause the design to become worn, and
white will show the most wear and tear.
