Mitchell, Ph.D. (1927-2017) was a certified Jungian analyst with a Ph.D. in psychology as well as a B.S. in electrical engineering from Caltech. His interest in working with clay began while working on his masters degree at U.C.L.A in 1950. At that time, he began studying about clay and glazes on his own. Although he had no formal education in the arts, Mitchell sculptured and painted for over 60 years. Mitchell lived in the Los Angeles area until 2004, when he and his wife, Roberta, retired and moved to Sun City. For 27 years prior to the move, he had a private clinical psycho - logy practice in the greater Los Angeles area. For the ten years following his self-directed initiation into clay work, Mitchell spent much of his time watercolor painting. Having entered psychoanalysis around 1955, he was guided by his therapists to paint his dreams, feelings, and fantasies. Painting and sculpturing be - came a daily activity for many years. The artwork was primarily associated with his ther - apy, and it never occurred to him that he would be displaying his sculptures, since the work was very personal. Mitchell has worked primarily in watercolors, low-fire clay, and stoneware, a high-fire clay. He has also created sculptures from many other materials, including wood (dowels, rods, popsicle sticks, etc.), papier mâché, styrofoam, wire, beads, string/cord, yarn, and cloth. A single sculpture usually takes him months to complete. More of Mitchell’s sculptures, paintings, and constructions can be viewed on the Internet at http://www.herovictim.com/artshow/artshow.html .
