Minutes of the Meeting of the
Arts and Culture Board
City of Georgetown, Texas
June 18, 2019
The Arts and Culture Board met on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in the second floor Small
Conference Room of Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8 th Street.
Present: Jane Estes, Susie Flatau, Tim Fleming, Laura Sewell, Sharon Snuffer, Carol Watson and Linda
Wilde.
Absent: Laura Sewell and Sharon Snuffer
Staff present: Amanda Still – Arts and Culture Coordinator, Eric P. Lashley – Library Director and Lawren
Weiss-Administrative Assistant.
Chair Estes called the meeting to order at 4:32 P.M.
Regular Agenda
A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. – Jane Estes, Board Chair. None present. No action
required.
B. Announcements regarding arts and culture. – Janes Estes, Chair.
a. Tim Fleming with Texans for the Arts shared that there will be over $16 million budgeted for
Texas Commission on the Arts for the coming year. Fleming outlined the proposed budget. A
“toolbox” for advocating for the arts is coming soon.
b. Susie Flatau with Georgetown Art Center announced the Nosotros exhibit and its programs
are going strong. Happiness Hour will take place this Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m. for members
and exhibiting artists. A Blessing of the Art event will be held on Saturday, June 29 from 6-8
p.m. Soul of America is the next exhibit. A call for board member applications is currently
open for Georgetown Art W orks. The board will be filling eight vacancies.
c. Carol Watson with Georgetown ISD announced the Fine Arts department is in the process of
hiring new teachers for the coming school year. Watson thanked Eric Lashley and Lark & Owl
Booksellers for participating in the Fine Arts scavenger hunt during their staff development
day.
d. Jane Estes with Lark & Owl Booksellers announced The Bistro will begin serving coffee at 9
a.m. tomorrow, June 19.
e. Linda Wilde with Texas Society of Sculptor announced the annual TSOS Summer Show will
be installed this Saturday, June 22. The show will feature 31 artists who created 72 pieces of
art. Local artist Nick Ramos will be the Juror this year. For the first time, three high school
students’ sculptures will be on display during this exhibit. No action required.
C. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes from the May 21, 2019 meeting minutes. –
Jane Estes, Chair. Motion by Flatau; second by Fleming to approve minutes from the May 21,
2019 Arts and Culture Board meeting. Approved 5-0 (Sewell and Snuffer absent).

D. Consideration of the Arts and Culture Coordinator’s report. – Amanda Still, Arts and Culture
Coordinator. Still discussed the monthly report with the board, as provided in the agenda packet,
regarding the following topics:
a. Grant cycle
b. Public art projects
c. Strategic planning
Lashley reported he recently met with representatives from the City of Taylor’s public art program.
They would like to have a joint meeting with the Arts and Culture Board in late summer or early fall,
with Amanda Still giving tour of the City before or after the meeting. Lashley also reported the Texas
Downtown Association conference will be held in October and the Arts and Culture Board members
may be invited to attend. No action required.
E. Report concerning the joint Downtown Gateway Standards meeting on June 19, 2019 with Planning
Department representatives, as well as representatives from the Main Street and Convention &
Visitors Bureau Boards. –Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley reported the Planning Department
will host a joint meeting with the Downtown Georgetown Association, Convention & Visitors Bureau,
Main Street and Arts & Culture boards to get feedback regarding the Downtown Gateway
Standards. Information gathered from this meeting will contribute to the 2030 Comprehensive Plan
update. Lashley encouraged board members to attend the meeting taking place in the Friends
Room of the library on June 19 at 7:30 A.M. No action required.
F. Consideration and possible action to accept donation of the Gwaihir sculpture by Marie -Carmel
Bordes from the Texas Society of Sculptors. –Eric Lashley, Library Director. The Gwaihir sculpture
was donated by the artist to the Texas Society of Sculptors. TSOS wishes to donate this piece to the
City of Georgetown. Board members asked Lashley if th e City would like to keep the piece, which is
currently located in the library lobby. Lashley agreed that the City would be happy to keep the piece
in its current location. Motion by Watson, second by Wilde to accept a donation from Marie-
Carmel Bordes of her Gwaihir sculpture. Approved 5-0 (Sewell and Snuffer absent).
G. Consideration and possible action to accept and select a sculpture donation from artist Ho Baron. –
Amanda Still, Arts and Culture Coordinator. Artist Ho Baron wishes to donate one of four bronze
sculptures to the City of Georgetown. Baron participated in one of the City’s first Sculpture Tours.
Board members reviewed photos of the proposed donations and asked Still to find out how much it
would cost to relocate the piece from El Paso to Georgetown. Board members favored Head Games
and Doppelganger, though there was concern regarding the weight and size of each piece. Still will
ask Baron for more information on the favored pieces before the board decides whether or not to
accept a donation. No action taken.
H. Consideration and possible action regarding future meeting dates. – Jane Estes, Board Chair. The
next meeting will occur as regularly scheduled on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 4:30 P.M. No action
taken.
Chair Estes adjourned the meeting at 6:13 p.m.
