The Board was established to encourage, stimulate, promote, and foster programs for the cultural enrichment of the City, thereby contributing to the quality of life in Georgetown, and develop an awareness of the value of the arts in the business community, local government and the general public. Page 6 of 22 GRAND VISION FOR ARTS AND CULTURE SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Page 7 of 22 VISION –What do successful arts destinations do? Buy a sculpture a year for a sculpture garden Have art centers and galleries Public murals Madison, WI has a rooftop sculpture garden Have centers for performing arts Have street performers Have artists in residence Have art theaters Have spaces for events like Word Play café which is a space for an open mic for poetry, storytelling an music, and studio art classes Chillicothe, Missouri has Cultural Corner Art the houses 5,000 sq. ft. of gallery, workshop and event space Have Arts in the Park Marfa, Texas is known for permanent sculptures Have museums Have free summer concerts Have a centerpiece Ann Arbor, Michigan has one of the largest street fairs in the country Page 8 of 22 SURVEY RESULTS –Help us refine/add Goals to take us in the direction of our vision SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Page 9 of 22 Goal I –Establish and foster a vibrant Art Center as a major component of a downtown arts, cultural, and entertainment district Partially achieved: The Art Center is not fully integrated into the city’s long term planning and still struggles to meet the criteria of “major component” Perhaps one of our most important goals, the establishment of the Art Center, as it could be the centerpiece of our arts community Strengthen the Arts Center to be better supported by the City; “Thriving” is key Restructure operation of the Art Center; quality of exhibits should be addressed Page 10 of 22 Goal II –Develop a sustainable arts in public places program for the City of Georgetown Partially achieved Ongoing/current/Successful Should remain a goal Established Build on existing art programs; continue to develop and refine Page 11 of 22 Goal III –Encourage the development of a thriving arts, cultural, and entertainment district in the downtown Partially achieved Ongoing/current There are components of such a district in downtown, but nothing in the way of an organized specific arts, cultural, and entertainment district Page 12 of 22 Goal IV –Improve access to information as well as assist in the promotion of local arts and cultural events (Marketing/Communication) Ongoing/current/shown improvement Improve website; restore Guide (valuable to Austin residents); established presence in publications Proposal -Integrate this goal as an objective to Goal 3 Page 13 of 22 Goal V –Provide grants to local nonprofits Ongoing/current/successful Refine guidelines and provide a judging rubric Page 14 of 22 Goal VI –Attain the Cultural District Designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts Achieved However… “I’m not really sure that we should omit goal six because it is integral to the success of our city and our strategic plan. Perhaps it can be removed as a goal, but embedded in another goal. Proposal -Integrate this Goal as an objective to Goal 3 – maintain Cultural District designation through reporting Page 15 of 22 Goal VII –Hire a Director of Arts and Culture to coordinate the arts and cultural activities of the City and work with local nonprofit arts orgs to improve the quality of life in Georgetown Partially achieved Needs to be full time Upgrade position to DIRECTOR of Arts and Culture. That title establishes the fact that we have a serious Arts and Culture organization, and that title makes grants and external financial support easier to obtain Continuing education –Texas Public Art Administrators; Americans for the Arts; Texans for the Arts Brown Bag Luncheon Page 16 of 22 Proposed Goals or Objectives “I don’t think we are at a place to retire any goals -but we may decide to refocus our energy or emphasis on some of the goals. We need to maintain our current level of work that resulted in Georgetown being designated a cultural district, so that goal should be reflected in our Strategic Plan, even if not directly as a goal, but as a supporting philosophy or ideal. Again, reframing 2-4 may help us reformulate or reconfigure goals for a new direction or focus.” Increase budget to $250K by end of 2024 Purchase public art Increase HOT funding designated for Arts and Culture Art Fair/Art Festival Page 17 of 22 Proposed Goals or Objectives Establishment of at least a quarterly and perhaps a monthly meeting of all directors/leaders/board chairs of Georgetown artistic/performing arts organizations in the city or those who expect to be able to apply for Arts and Culture Board grants (Brown Bag Luncheon) Attract arts businesses such as galleries and artist co-ops Develop a sculpture garden Vibrant Performing Arts Auditorium (with a capacity of having 2,000 attendees) having a proscenium stage, orchestra pit, wings, storage, meeting rooms, guest artist suites, and art gallery space in the lobby Convert Library sculpture show from TSOS to City of Georgetown Page 18 of 22 GOALS ACTIVITY SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Page 19 of 22 BREAK SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Page 20 of 22 OBJECTIVES ACTIVITY SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 Page 21 of 22 Summary Staff to compile data from retreat and recommend strategies for each objective Draft of 2020-2025 Strategic Plan submitted for review to Board before October Board meeting Discuss draft at October Board meeting Discuss budget priorities at October Board meeting (Strategic Plan budget and 2019-2020 budget) Goal to adopt 2020-2025 Strategic Plan at November Board meeting Page 22 of 22
