The Road Trip will venture to Fort Worth, October 23-24, to explore the city’s arts & culture venues. The trip will also allow for participants to meet with arts & culture organizers in the area. Lashley asked the board members to let him know if they’re interested in attending. Lashley reported that he and Dana had attended the monthly cultural district l unch. The big news from that meeting was that Laura Sewell is the new Sarofim School of Fine Arts Manager. She will be the main point person from Southwestern University regarding fine arts. C. Report and possible action regarding the expenditure of funds from the Arts & Culture board budget. – Lawren Weiss reported expenditures from the previous month: $50 to Ideal Signs for before and after images of the mural building on 711 Main St., $64.84 to HEB for supplies for Joe Magnano’s mural reception. Discussion moved to how to spend the remainder of this year’s budget money. Lashley explained that because there weren’t as many ads sold as anticipated, the remainder of the Arts & Culture budget funds needs to go towards paying for the Austin Monthly insert. After much discussion regarding the funds, Stewart moved to spend remaining budget funds for FY 2014-2015 on the Arts & Culture insert in Austin Monthly. Amanda Still seconded the motion. Motion passed, 5-2 (Anderson, Waggoner opposed). F. Update regarding the Arts & Culture Board’s budget for FY 2015-16. – Eric Lashley. Lashley asked the board to consider their goals for next year. He asked that the board consider deciding on one large project. That way, if they decide to apply for a grant, the Board will already have a project in mind to use the funds towards. Lashley also asked the Board to consider how they wish to categorize funds for next year, and bring ideas t o September’s meeting. Board members asked Lashley to create an estimated budget for a potential artist in residency space. G. Review of the City of Georgetown Sidewalk Ordinance. – Eric Lashley. Lashley asked the board to review the City of Georgetown Sidewalk Ordinance. He explained that any sculptures displayed on City property must be approved by the Arts & Culture Board. Lashley notified the board of Georgetown Art Work’s plan to have the December & January exhibit pieces displayed in front of Georgetown Art Center, as well as on the splash pad. In order to do this, Georgetown Art Works must submit a proposal to the Arts & Culture board for approval. H. Discussion about options for the 2nd floor of Georgetown Art Center. –Eric Lashley. During item F, Board members requested that Lashley create an estimated budget for potential artist - in-residency space for the second floor of the Georgetown Art Center. This will allow Board members to create an appropriate budget for next fiscal year. J. Discussion of future data collection related to arts and culture. – Dana Hendrix. Hendrix passed out a spreadsheet (attached to these minutes) and asked board members to select the top 10 items they believe are priorities in data collection. Consider data collections for the cultural district as a whole, as well as for individual non-profits. What data can best demonstrate the impact of the arts & culture in Georgetown? Spreadsheets should be returned to Hendrix at September’s meeting. Page 6 of 22 K. Final report on 711 Main St. mural and artist reception. –Eric Lashley. Lashley reported that the mural is complete and the artist reception on August 7 was well attended. Lashley reported that just hours prior to the artist reception, he found out that Joe Magnano had been arrested in 2014 for vandalism on the Prada Marfa sculpture in west Texas. He pled guilty, paid a fine, and paid for the piece’s restoration. Lashley asked the board if, in the future, they would want to look into the backgrounds of artists they select for various projects. Discussion ensued; no motion was made. L. They are very excited and very grateful! Should be almost full now, right? Dear John, We were informed of the scholarships through The Rob Costello family, friends of ours. I homeschool my five children. I am a single mom with very little income. This free art program will allow my children art education through eyes of another, besides me. I think this is a benefit because I only have so much art experience and available art supplies. Some of my children are very artistic, beyond my abilities, and can use more instruction. This program will allow them to see if art is something they want to pursue and give us an idea of where to head for classes in the future. Thank you so much for this opportunity. Sincerely, Sami Winners and family Sir, I was sent an email from the GISD about an opportunity for my children to attend an art cla ss at your institute this summer. I have 2 middle aged girls who would love this experience. Both are very crafty at home and love all types of project making. One is in art class at school and loves it. My girls are Skylar Williams who is a student at Williams Elementary and Sierra Williams who is a student at Forbes Middle School. I saw several of your classes that they would love. I saw the duct tape class in August and they have both had me buying duct tape in the past so I know they would love to truly learn that art. Please let me know what I would need to do to get them in your program. Thanks, Marsha Williams 512-630-5985 Raymond Votolato was the choir teacher who referred my granddaughter. This has turned out to be a busy but great summer. After spending a month at her mother’s she returns to her father’s household and has been super happy to know she is going to attend the Georgetown Art Center. It will teacher her skills that she will be able to utilize for the rest of her long life. She will learn how to capture the best picture and therefore create wonderful memories that she can cherish forever and pass on to her children and grandchildren. Thank You so much for this great opportunity! Minda Navarro, grandmother Hi John, My name is Shannon Reagan and I have a 9 year old daughter Sydney Reagan. Her art teacher, Laura Dominguez, contacted us to recommend this program for Sydney. She said there was a scholarship available? We are interested in the scholarship and the Jewelry Making art class during the week of August 17th through the 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00. She told us there were only 24 spots available, so we understand if they have been filled. We think this class sounds pretty cool and if you do have a scholarship opening, we would love to be considered. Thank you, Shannon Reagan Hi John, I got an email from Mr. V, about art classes, I wanted to see what I needed to do to register my daughter? She would be interested in the anime class. Thanks, Telisita Martinez. Thank you, John! Just as an FYI, I am a member of the Gtown Art Center board, and I have been thrilled to see the increased enrollment in the camps, this summer! I hope that we can continue to build our relationship with Cordovan and our youngest citizens, to expand everyone's cultural horizons. And, my kids are really looking forward to the camp! :-) Rachael (versluys8@aol.com) Page 9 of 22 City of Georgetown, Texas Arts and Culture Advisory Board September 15, 2015 SUBJECT: Discussion about options for the 2nd floor of Georgetown Art Center. - Eric Lashley (Discussion) ITEM SUMMARY: FINANCIAL IMPACT: This item has no direct financial impact. Three of the sculptures are completed (see photographs) and one is being produced at this time (see sketch). Peter Mangan- Statement/Bio From early childhood I’ve been able to express myself visually. Creating artwork enables me to use both planning and intuition to make objects that communicate to others. The struggle with ideas, materials, and tools is a constant challenge. It is rewarding to bring something original into the world and see how people respond. I received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. A move to San Francisco in 1979 expanded my artistic awareness by having access to the city’s museums and vibrant gallery scene. In 1987, I received an MFA degree in Sculpture from San Jose State University. I lived and worked as an artist in the Bay Area for 35 years. For 16 of those years, I split my time between S.F. and Texas. Since March of 2014, my wife and I are happy to be full-time Texans again. Metals and glass are my primary media. The solid strength of meta l is a good contrast to the delicate transparency of glass. Both old and new techniques are utilized, from plasma cutting and blacksmithing to computer controlled kilns and medieval glass painting methods. My artwork has been shown and collected in the U.S.A., Europe, and Japan. My current focus in art explores the human figure. A basic silhouette is a starting point we can all relate to. What makes up the interior of a person: the memories, humor, quirks, faults, and emotions? What of the external environment: relationships, possessions, location, time, and obstacles? These are concepts I am exploring through sculpture.
