MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: Nosa Asowata, Susan Cooper, David Garlock, Nancy Hill, Michael Kelley, Thom Sinwell and Richard Thielmann. MEMBERS ABSENT: STAFF IN ATTENDANCE: Sally Miculek–Library Director, Dana Hendrix, Technical Services Librarian and Lawren Weiss- Administrative Assistant. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Board Chair Kelley. A. Citizens wishing to address the board. -Michael Kelley, Chair. None were present. No action required. B. Staff introductions and service spotlight. -Sally Miculek, Library Director and Dana Hendrix, Technical Services Librarian. Miculek introduced Dana Hendrix to the Board, noting Hendrix has worked for the Library since 2015. She started as the Fine Arts Librarian but recently moved over to the Technical Services Librarian position after Sally Bernier’s retirement earlier this year. Kelley inquired about Hendrix’s biggest challenge as the Technical Services Librarian. She expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Friends of the Library who greatly supplement the Library’s annual collection needs, among other items. Hendrix gave an overview on Overdrive, physical collections, the materials budget and the Technical Servies staff. No action required. C. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes from the July 6, 2021 Library Advisory Board meeting. -Michael Kelley, Board Chair. Board members did not have revis ions for the July minutes. Motion by Thielmann; second by Hill to approve the July 6, 2021 Library Advisory Board minutes as distributed. Approved 7-0. D. Consideration of Library Director's report. -Sally Miculek, Library Director. Thielmann acknowledged Miculek’s 6-month anniversary as Library Director. Miculek read the patron comments as follows: Patron comment: “Attention Library Board, It is my understanding that you are normalizing the sin of homosexuality. This is clearly a sin in the Bible. Please stop this action for the sake of our children.” Patron comment: “Thanks for Library from a patron. When I moved into Sun City after the Feb. storm The It at the community center was out with water damage the shut down red poppy lounge. Was a value to me-seven days a week. That is one goal as I see it to make this space on the library valuable.” Patron comment: “The G’town library is Wonderful! Special thanks to Becca for her great help!!” Patron comment: “As a frequent requester of new materials, I would like to thank GPL for making it easy to request items. I also request items for purchase from RRPL, and they now require 30 days to pass between requests, whereas it used to be more generally, "once a month." This 30-day requirement is a pain, and I hope the GPL never considers doing that. It's like dealing with an insurance company where you have to wait exactly six months or a year before your next treatment.” Discussion followed about the Library’s challenged materials process and the City’s Special Emphasis Observance policy. Miculek announced the Library did not receive the Texas State Library and Archives Commission grant for the KIC Bookeye scanner for the digital histories project. Despite not receiving the grant, Library staff still hope to implement the project by possibly asking for support from the Friends of the Library or by utilizing other funding options as they become available. Miculek asked Thielmann and Cooper to give an overview of their experience doing a WOW!mobile ride-along. Thielmann explained that he rode-along to the Sun City bookmobile stop and had a great experience. His reaction was surprise at what a huge effort is given by two staff members and two vehicles (WOW!mobile and WOW:HD, the Library’s bookmobile bus and home delivery van). Thielmann was impressed by the personal service; how bookmobile staff knew patrons by name and had their items ready when they walked up. Thielmann noted Library Page 4 of 11 staff also carry dog biscuits on the bus for patrons visiting with their pet. Cooper’s ride-along was on a Wednesday to Cypress Creek Apartments which the Outreach Team’s busiest stop for kids. Cooper was impressed by how much the Library staff enjoyed engaging with the kids. She suggested advertising to nearby apartments so they can walk over to that stop as well. Cooper also inquired about taking WOW to farmers markets, Wolf Ranch, and other locations in the future. Miculek gave a brief café update, opening discussion regarding the use of the name Red Poppy for the new café in the upcoming request for proposals. Board members wondered if keeping Red Poppy in the name would be beneficial to the space since Georgetown is known as the red poppy capital of Texas. Miculek explained that the new business operating the café space would come with it’s own name and would not use Red Poppy. Miculek noted since the previous business’s name was Red Poppy Coffee Co., it would be important to have a clear distinction between the former and new vendor. Miculek reviewed the PowerPoint as provided in the agenda packet. The Board discussed how to properly convey to City Council the Library’s staffing needs in future budgets and locations. The Board create a new strategic plan and advocate at public meetings. No action required. E. Consideration and possible action to recommend to City Council the Library apply for the St. Davids’s Health Foundation Libraries for Health grant. -Sally Miculek, Library Director. Miculek asked the Board to recommend to Council the Library apply for the St. David’s Health Foundation Libraries for Health grant. Miculek provided background information to the Board regarding how the Library was invited to apply for th e grant. The grant award would include a part-time lay mental health worker, as well as a monetary award ranging from 7,500-25,000. St. David’s would be responsible for the health worker’s salary and benefits, while the Library would be responsible for providing a desk, internet access and occasional space for a private meeting with patrons. The person is this role would assist with staff training and offerings for mental health, first aid and wellness resources. Miculek also noted that multiple libraries will be awarded this grant, which will create a network of local libraries offering service which will impact and expand policies and offerings for those services. The position would be funded for 2 years in phase 1, with the possibility of re-applying for phase 2. Motion by Thielmann; second by Asowata to recommend that City Council approve the Library applying for the St. David’s Health Foundation Libraries for Health grant. Approved 7-0. F. Director’s note: Comment is coming from a volunteer; we regularly shift materials throughout the collection to manage space constraints. 9. Patron comment: I find the new book shelves to be very difficult to use. There are far too many books and placing them end on complicates by eliminating the visual effect of the cover. Please either place only those that can be placed with the cover showing or place fewer books out. a. Director’s note: Our circulation has not quite reached pre-2020 levels. Additionally, we are purchasing many new books right now to complete end-of-year purchasing cycles, and because this is a high publishing season. These combined factors have rendered our shelves a little crowded throughout the building, particularly notably in all of our New Books collections. As the New Books get checked out and free up space, we are facing covers out as much as we can. We look forward to face-out displays once more being an option for the entirety of our New Books section.
