Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
City of Georgetown, Texas
June 11, 2015
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 6pm at 1101 N. College Street,
Georgetown, TX 78626.
Regular Session – To begin no earlier than 6:00 pm.
Parks and Recreation Board may, at any time, recess the Regular Session to convene an Executive
Session at the request of the Robert Johnson for any purpose authorized by the Open Meetings Act,
Texas Government Code Chapter 551.)
Regular Agenda
A Call to Order
Bob Johnson called the meeting to order.
B Roll Call
Bob Palko was absent.
C Update from the Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation
Chuck Bridges stated he did not have an update from the Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation
as he was out of town for their last meeting. Kimberly Garrett stated the Daddy Daughter dance is on
Friday, June 12th. She stated there were 158 people registered and is more than last year. Kimberly
Garrett stated they applied for a grant from HEB and they received the grant. This is for sensory table
for the playscape. It was for about $6,000.00 which included shipping. They will receive the money
mid-July and then it will be ordered. Kimberly Garrett stated it will be in by the Fall of this year.
D Project Updates for Garey Park, Williams Drive Pool, San Jose Splash Pad, Village Parks, San Gabriel
Park Master Plan, San Gabriel Park Bank Stabilization, Westside Park, and VFW Park.
• Garey Park – A design contract with Halff Associates was approved by City Council on May 26th.
The Halff team including Tim Bargainer and Brian Binkowski will continue with the design of the
park. A more detailed look at the maintenance and operations plan is scheduled to go to the
General Government and Finance Subcommittee on June 16th.
• Williams Drive Pool - The master plan is complete and design services are underway.
Construction is scheduled to start after the 2015 pool season.
• San Jose Splash Pad - The splash pad at San Jose Park is under construction and going well.
Estimated completion is the end of June. A grand opening celebration will be scheduled as soon
as a completion date is determined.
• Village Parks - Madrone and Rowan Parks are under construction. Most of the concrete has
been poured. The Parks crew will be installing the playgrounds in the next month. Estimated
completion is early July.

• San Gabriel Park Master Plan – The master plan is scheduled to be presented to City Council at
the Council Workshop on June 23rd .
• San Gabriel Park Bank Stabilization - The construction plans are complete. All permitting has
been secured except clearance from the Texas Historical Commission. A cultural resource survey
is now being conducted for the existing wall in the river.
• Westside Park – The master plan is still underway. Cambrian Environmental is continuing to
work on the environmental study at the park.
• VFW Park - Construction plans are being finalized. The project is scheduled to be bid early
summer and construction will coincide with the improvements to 2nd street.
E Update on Downtown Related Boards Meeting
Kimberly Garrett stated that quarterly the downtown related board chairs and staff meet to discuss
items related to downtown. Boards included in the discussion are Arts and Culture, Mainstreet, CVB,
HARC, Parks and Recreation, Library and other non-profits in the downtown. This item is to update the
board on the collaborations of all these different groups.
F Update on Sunday Hours at the Recreation Center.
Kimberly Garrett gave an update on Sunday hours at the recreation center. The Recreation Center
started Sunday operation hours on April 12th. The hours are 12 noon - 6 pm. Current programs and
classes offered include:
• Pickleball classes
• Volleyball League
• Line Dancing
• Cycling Class
In addition, the gyms are open for free play, the walking track is available, the weight room is open and
the game room in the Teen/Senior Center.
G Update on Summer Programming
Kimberly Garrett gave an update on summer programming. Update on summer programming including
camps and swim lessons, The Parks and Recreation Department is currently offering 16 different camps
with 1,885 children registered for the summer. The camps offered include adaptive camp, adventure
teen camp, art camp, camp goodwater, hula hoop camp, kid city, LEGO camp, sports camp, teen self-
defense camp, tennis camp, and volleyball camp. In aquatics, the outdoor swimming pools opened for
the regular season on May 30th. There several swim lesson classes offered as well as lifeguarding class,
water aerobics, and summer swim team. There are currently 764 participants enrolled in aquatics
classes.
H Update on park damage due to recent flooding.
Eric Nuner gave an update on park damage due to recent flooding. Damage to the parks from the
Memorial Day flooding was mainly limited to debris cleanup. The low water pedestrian bridge in San
Gabriel Park was damaged. The repairs are estimated at $20,000.
I Discussion on future park facilities, trails and long range park planning.
Discussion on future parks including Garey Park, San Gabriel Park and Westside Park, trail expansion,
and parkland in the downtown. This will include possible timing, feasibility of developing/renovating

land and facilities and funding needed. This discussion will include possible re-purposing/converting
existing facilities.

Board meeting.
Motion made by Keith Fruge, second by Chuck Bridges to approve the minutes from the May 20, 2015
Parks and Recreation Board meeting. Approved 6-0
