Knight questioned why this application was accepted without any dimensions given. The materials and colors are only included in the letter of intent. Synatschk responded that the applicant was contacted by code enforcement officers due to the sign already being installed. This is the application that came in. Knight expressed frustration over the incomplete submittal and asked to take the incomplete application to the entire commission for recourse. Davila explained that the City has a process set in place to address code violations and enforcement issues. In addition, she explained that city staff was working on detailed checklists, and customer bulletins to provide clarity and guidance to applicants. The hope is to help customers understand the processes and help them provide more thorough information for each application. The commissioners and staff discussed how to reach the people that are installing signs without permits and CDC’s. The request includes a flush mounted sign on the primary façade, a hanging sign mounted underneath the canopy and vinyl signage mounted inside the windows and door. Sign Type Flush mounted sign Size 15 square feet Façade width is 20.5’ Materials Vinyl mounted on existing sign Location Flush mounted on primary façade Sign Type Hanging sign Size 6 square feet Materials Vinyl and MDO Location Mounted under canopy Georgetown Downtown and Community Services Department Staff Report Historic and Architectural Review Commission CDC-2014-016 714 South Austin Avenue, Suite 201 Page 2 of 3 HISTORIC CONTEXT Date of construction: 1889 Historic Resources Survey Priority: 1984 - High 2007 - High National Register Designation: Contributing Structure in NR District Texas Historical Commission Designation: No State Designation STAFF ANALYSIS The applicant’s request includes a flush mounted sign on the primary façade, a hanging sing mounted underneath the canopy, and window and door signage mounted on the interior of the glass. The hanging sign and window and door signs have already been installed. The total façade width of the building is 20.5 feet. When combined with the existing signage for the business on the first floor, the signage exceeds the allowable square footage. However, refacing the existing flush mounted sign does not alter the legal non-conforming status, allowing the installation of the sign. Any future signs proposed for the structure will be reviewed against the legal non-conforming status. The proposed colors for the signage are in compliance with the design guidelines and the placement of the signs do not obscure any character defining architectural features of the structure.
