SUBJECT:
Update on potential impacts to transit options, for the City of Georgetown, based on the designation of the
City as part of the Austin Urbanized Area -- Edward G. Polasek, AICP, Transportation Services Director
ITEM SUMMARY:
On March 26, 2012, the Census Bureau released the Urban Area designations from the 2010 Census. The
City of Georgetown was classified as urban and placed within the Austin Urbanized Area as part of an
existing Large Urban Area.
At the November 8, 2011 and February 14, 2012 City Council Workshops, the Texas Transportation Institute
(TTI) provided a presentation on the possible impacts that the 2010 Census Designation of Urbanized Areas
will have on Transit Funding.
Urban Areas are created by the Census Bureau using "Places" and the adjacent, densely settled/developed
areas. Urban Areas are not defined by city limits and may include one or more "Places".
The City of Georgetown, based on the 2000 Census, was considered part of the Rural Area and received
transit programs from CARTS which provides Rural Transit for most of Central Texas.
Being part of the Austin Large Urban Area will drastically limit the type and amount of funding available
to the City of Georgetown for transit programs.
Texas Transporation Institute staff are bringing back a report on steps the City of Georgetown could take to
provide a seamless transition from Rural to Urban.
