PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is America’s first Greek-letter organization founded in
1908 by and for African American college women; and
WHEREAS, as the nation’s oldest African American Sorority was founded as a social and service
organization by undergraduate Ethel Hedgeman Lyle on the campus of Howard University in 1908, along
with nineteen additional courageous women; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson and Chelle
Luper Wilson, the Sorority’s current theme is Launching New Dimensions of Service. Its membership is
comprised of distinguished women who boast excellent academic records, proven leadership skills and are
involved in the global community through advocacy and service; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Sorority, has chartered a new Undergraduate Chapter on this day,
November 15, 2015, at Southwestern University; and
WHEREAS, the Sorority counts among its membership, honorary members such as Ava Duvernay,
Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mae Jemison, Alicia Keys and Dr.
Maya Angelou, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, the charter members of this new Undergraduate Chapter, Beulah Agyemang-Barimah,
Riley Daniels, Nyokabi Kamau, Anne Means, Jasmine Mixon, Meranda Nunnery, Zainab Oketokoun, Salome
Owino, Cozette Palmer, Meghan Rayford, Vallery Rusu, Nicole Turbinton are found to possess and are
poised to promote high ethical and moral standards and pledge to uphold and extend the policies and progams
of Alphw Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated while simultaneously providing “Service to All Mankind.”;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown is proud to have amongst its citizens, members of such an
historic organization, and look forward to its continued public service in Georgetown, Southwestern
University and the surrounding areas.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim November 15, 2015 as:
