PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Deirdre Ann Furr made her mark on the world as a daughter, mother, wife, friend and
teacher; and
WHEREAS, Deirdre taught English Language Arts at Georgetown High School for twelve years and
was a dynamic and outstanding teacher who was well loved and respected by her students and fellow
teachers; and
WHEREAS, Deirdre had a gift for engaging her students in the subject matter, and was innovative in
using technology as a teaching tool; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her excellent teaching, she founded Georgetown High School’s first Gay
Straight Alliance. She cared very much about creating a safe and accepting environment for all students; and
WHEREAS, she will always be missed by the Georgetown community and we honor her memory by
awarding prizes in her name for the Georgetown PFLAG annual essay contest; and
WHEREAS, the theme for the Essay Prize for the 2016-2017 school year is “Why is marriage equality
important?”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclamation Thursday, March 23, 2017 as
DEIRDRE ANN FURR DAY
