HomeMy WebLinkAboutGirl Scouts Proclamation_02.2016 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, throughout its long and distinguished history, Girl Scouting has inspired millions of girls and women with the highest ideals of character, conduct and patriotism, who act to make the world a better place; and WHEREAS, the late Lady Bird Johnson said, β€œIt is important for a child to plant a seed – to water it, nourish it, tend to it, watch it grow, and when he does, and when she does, they themselves will grow into great citizens.”; and WHEREAS, the girls in Georgetown Girl Scout Troop 572 have partnered with the City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department to restore native Texas wildflowers and milkweed plants to the San Gabriel River trail through a year-long Girl Scout Junior Bronze Award project which included the planting of 5,000 native wildflower and milkweed seed balls along a stretch of the trail; and WHEREAS, the propagation of these native plants is a vital part of restoring and sustaining the natural ecosystem of Texas and of Georgetown, and in protecting the habitat of our native wildlife and species such as the Monarch butterfly. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim the Winfred H. Bonner Trail as a native wildflower and Monarch butterfly habitat and encourage the citizens of Georgetown to take advantage of the opportunities to learn more about our native wildflowers and Monarch butterfly habitats and how to protect them.
