P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in use today, and it evolved
from the Badge of Military Merit created in 1782 by General George Washington for the common
soldier; and
WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is specifically awarded to any member of the United States
Armed Services wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has great admiration and the utmost gratitude for all the
men and women of the Armed Forces who have selflessly served their country and this city and
who have borne the brunt of battle; and
WHEREAS, veterans have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and
communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all; and
WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women of Georgetown who
served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by
our citizens; and
WHEREAS, Purple Heart recipients are an integral part of our society and it is important that
we acknowledge them for their courage and show them the support they have earned; and
WHEREAS, on September 24, 2013, the City of Georgetown became the first City in Texas
to be designated a Purple Heart City.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM the observation of August 7 as Purple Heart Appreciation Day and also
recognize the upcoming 3rd anniversary of the City of Georgetown, Texas as a
PURPLE HEART CITY
