HomeMy WebLinkAboutTravel & Tourism Week_05.2016 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, travel has a positive effect on Texas and the nation’s economic prosperity and image abroad, to business productivity and to individual travelers’ well-being; and WHEREAS, travel to and within the United States provides significant economic benefits for the nation, generating more than $2.1 trillion in economic output in 2014, with $927.9 billion spent directly by travelers; and WHEREAS, travel is among the largest private-sector employers in the United States, supporting 15 million jobs in 2014, including 8 million directly in the travel industry and 7 million in other industries; and WHEREAS, travel to and within Texas provides significant economic benefits for the state, generating $70.6 billion spent directly by travelers and tax revenues of $6 billion for state and local governments, funds used to support essential services and programs; and WHEREAS, travel in Georgetown, Texas provides economic benefits for the City, employing 640 and generating $2.1 million in local tax revenue and $71 million in total direct travel spending; and WHEREAS, leisure travel, which accounts for more than three-quarters of all trips taken in the United States, supports our region’s arts, entertainment and recreation sector of tourism and spurs local job creation. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim May 8 – 14, 2016, as TRAVEL & TOURISM WEEK IN GEORGETOWN TEXAS
