PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, June 5, 2017 marked Abe Harrison’s 100th anniversary from the date his Draft
Registration Card was accepted in Taylor by the Williamson County Registrar; and
WHEREAS, after the draft quota for April 28, 1918 had been filled, Abe Harrison was told he could
return home and would receive his call on the next quota from the county; he insisted he be permitted to go
at that time and told the Examination Board that if it was not possible for them to send him as a draftee, he
desired to go as a volunteer. Those in charge of the matter finally agreed to his going and placed his name
among those to go forward that night; and
WHEREAS, Private Abe Harrison, as a member of India Company of the 360th Infantry Regiment and
the 20th Division, contributed to the capture of the Foret du Bois le Pretre during the St. Mihiel offensive from
August 21st to October 6, 1918; and
WHEREAS, Private Abe Harrison was mortally wounded on the blood-stained fields of the Meuse-
Argonne forest of France just eight days before the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. Lingering for
fifteen days in an Army hospital, his suffering came to an end on November 18, 1918; and
WHEREAS, American Legion members unanimously agreed to name Post 174 as Private Abe
Harrison Post and earned its permanent charter on June 4, 1934. Private Abe Harrison will always be missed
by the Georgetown community and Post 174 honors his memory by awarding scholarships in his name for
graduating seniors of Georgetown high schools.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2017 as
ABE HARRISON DAY
