PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Deirdre Furr Essay Contest was inaugurated in school year 2014-2015 by PFLAG
Austin to commemorate Ms. Furr, and the first Awards Ceremony was held in March 2015; and
WHEREAS, the late Ms. Furr taught English Language Arts at Georgetown High School for twelve
years and was a dynamic and outstanding teacher, who was well loved and respected by her students and
fellow teachers; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her teaching innovations and excellence, she founded Georgetown High
School’s Gay Straight Alliance, caring very much about a safe and accepting environment for all students;
and
WHEREAS, in memory of her legacy, PFLAG Austin is sponsoring the fourth annual essay contest in
school year 2017-2018, opening a wider circle to include high school students throughout Central Texas
School Districts and Home Schools; and
WHEREAS, PFLAG Austin, as name sponsor, will award prizes on Wednesday April 11, 2018 at 7:00
PM in the lobby of the Prothro Building at Southwestern University; the essay theme is “What challenges do
LGBTQ+ students face when attempting to share in romantic, intimate or companionate relationships in high
school.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, April 11, 2018 as
DEIRDRE ANN FURR DAY
