HomeMy WebLinkAboutNational Suicide Prevention Awareness Month_09.2018 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown recognizes suicide as a public health problem, with suicide being the 11th leading cause of death overall in Texans; and WHEREAS, the CDC reports nearly 45,000 lives lost to suicide in 2016 and reports that suicide rates have risen more than 18% since 1999; and WHEREAS, suicide is preventable and the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental illness, substance abuse and suicide prevention services should be eliminated and barriers that discourage persons at risk from seeking life-saving help should be removed; and WHEREAS, Alan’s Hope is striving to increase awareness of ways to improve mental health through a self-care calendar developed with the WilCo Wellness Alliance – a calendar with daily wellness suggestions and events; and WHEREAS, Alan’s Hope is sponsoring the “Guitars for Hope” 5K Run to be held at 8:30 AM on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Twin Lakes Park in Cedar Park, followed by wellness information and activities until noon.
