HomeMy WebLinkAboutPurple Heart City 2019_ P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, the original Purple Heart, known as the Badge of Military Merit, an American decoration and the oldest active military decoration in the world, was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York, on August 7, 1782; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was the first American service award or decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to any member of the United States Armed Services wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States; and WHEREAS, the contemporary Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to military members of the United States Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy, and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who were killed in action or who died from wounds received in action; and WHEREAS, The City of Georgetown would like to honor the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Texas Capital Chapter 1919 and those who put their lives at risk in service of their Country and their fellow citizens; WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has great appreciation, admiration and the utmost gratitude for this noble organization and for all the men and women of the Armed Forces who have selflessly served their country and this city and who have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all; and WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women of Georgetown who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens; and WHEREAS, Purple Heart Day is observed nationally each year on August 7; and WHEREAS, on September 24, 2013, the City of Georgetown was recognized as the first City in Texas to be designated a Purple Heart City; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the observation of August 7, 2019 as PURPLE HEART DAY and also recognize the upcoming 6th anniversary of the City of Georgetown, Texas as a PURPLE HEART CITY
