HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuneteenth Celebration_06.2019 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, June 1865, commemorates the day General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas to take charge of the State of Texas following the Civil War and announced that Texas slaves were free; and WHEREAS, June 19, 2019, marks the 154th Anniversary of the day Texas slaves were officially freed, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth is celebrated in the City of Georgetown, sponsored by the Georgetown Cultural Citizen Memorial Association on June 15, 2019 with a celebration of freedom, friends, family and fun; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 states. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2019, as the time for commemoration of JUNETEENTH INDEPENDENCE DAY In Georgetown, Texas
