PROCLAMATION
K. Virginia Craig was born at home to the Pyles family in Paris, Texas, on July 29, 1921. The Pyles had moved
to North Texas during the time of the Republic of Texas. Virginia grew up in Paris, Shreveport, and Austin.
She graduated from Austin High in 1939 and has remained “Loyal Forever” since. Her family lived modestly,
but always had a home and something to eat (even if dinner might be cornbread hoe cakes and beans or
greens). She remembers their house in Paris without electricity or indoor plumbing.
Virginia married an Austin boy, Courtland P. Craig in 1939, and they remained married until his death in
1994. The first part of their life together was in Austin, where Courtland worked for the Steck Printing
Company, and they raised their two boys, Prentice and Randall in North Austin. They were charter members
of Highland Park Baptist Church, and she maintains membership there today. When the boys were in school,
Virginia was employed as a secretary by the Texas Legislature, the State Health Department, and in retail in
Austin. Later, she worked in estate sales.
Courtland and Virginia moved from Austin to Georgetown in 1976. She was a charter member of the
Georgetown Hospital Association and volunteered there for many years. She helped organize the first
Christmas Stroll in Georgetown and pulled a Christmas wagon in it! She created one of the most beautiful
yards in Serenada. She has always been extremely creative, a master seamstress, and continues to knit and
sew today. She reads fiction voraciously, is politically astute, and votes as soon as her mail ballot arrives. She
is completely devoted to her granddaughters and great grandchildren. Virginia now lives independently at
the Oaks Retirement Center in Georgetown.
I, JOSH SCHROEDER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS
