HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuneteenth Celebration_06.2022 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, June 1865, commemorates the day General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas to take charge of the State of Texas following the Civil War and announced that Texas slaves were free; and WHEREAS, June 19, 2022, marks the 157th Anniversary of the day Texas slaves were officially freed, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day, Emancipation Day or Jubilee Day, has been celebrated annually for 70 years in the City of Georgetown, and this year it is sponsored by the Georgetown Cultural Citizen Memorial Association on June 18, 2022, with a special anniversary celebration of freedom, friends, family and fun; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday, as declared by President Biden on June 17, 2021, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans across the United States. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH SCHROEDER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, do set aside and hereby proclaim June 19, 2022 as JUNETEENTH NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY In Georgetown, Texas
