HomeMy WebLinkAboutPurple Heart City 2021_09.2021 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the Order of the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in use today, and it evolved from the Badge of Military Merit created by General George Washington for the common soldier on August 7, 1782; the Order of the Purple Heart was the first American service award or combat decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy, and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown would like to honor the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Texas Chapter 1919 and those who put their lives at risk in service of their country and their fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has great appreciation, admiration and the utmost gratitude for this organization and for all the men and women of the Armed Forces who have selflessly served their country and this city and who have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all; and WHEREAS, August 7th is nationally recognized as Purple Heart Appreciation Day; and on September 24, 2013, the City of Georgetown became the first City in Texas to be designated a Purple Heart City; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH SCHROEDER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim the observation of August 7th annually as Purple Heart Appreciation Day, and urge the citizens and organizations of Georgetown to display the American Flag as well as other public expressions of recognition of our Purple Heart recipients; and ALSO, BE IT PROCLAIMED that September 24, 2021 is the 8th anniversary of the City of Georgetown, Texas as a PURPLE HEART CITY
