awards | June 14, 2022
Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Pitts:
At this time, I’d like to call our Communications and Public Engagement staff up to
the front to be recognized for winning three statewide communications awards this
past week. Our team won for best use of social media, for our electronic newsletter,
and internal communications. Aly is going to tell us more.
Aly Van Dyke
Thank you so much, everyone. I want to recognize the staff here (name). We received
the awards from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers, which
means we were up against dozens of cities across the state. We won:
First Place for Best Use of Social Media (Unplanned) for our “Hey!” post. On July 15
last year (“Get To Know Your Customers Day”), we simply posted “Hey” on Twitter
and Facebook – just to see what would happen. And what happened was magical.
We received more than 200 comments on Facebook, mostly of people laughing and
joking with us about what happened. This post also, incredibly, garnered the highest
impressions in all of 2021 (excluding Winter Storm Uri). Our social media and
marketing coordinator, Beth, had a blast responding to all our customers – earning
her unofficial title as the GIF Goddess.
First Place for Electronic Newsletter for the Georgetown Weekly. This newsletter
goes out every Thursday afternoon and includes important information from across
our social media channels – helping us reach folks who may not follow us OR see our
billboards on the Facebook highway. Our percent open benchmark for this
newsletter is 26.7 percent, based on industry standards. Each edition frequently goes
over 40 percent. We have more than 15,000 subscribers. We continue to add more
each month (looking at everyone here: subscribe today at georgeetown.org!), and
that open rate doesn’t change.
Third Place for Internal Communications for our December 2021 Georgetown
Essential Messaging video, Undercover Boss. The GEM is a monthly memo and video
David Morgan sends out to employees to let them know about important things
about the City. We usually have a bit of fun with them in December. And that’s all
David will let me share about that.
I couldn’t be prouder of the work this team does, day in and day out. Every person
standing up here, those who couldn’t make it, and the communications staff from
other departments, is an asset to this City and its residents. They’re working
incredibly hard to reach people, engage them, and make sure they’re informed
about what all we’re doing to serve them. Thank you for letting us celebrate these
awards with you!
