HomeMy WebLinkAboutBetty Jukes Day_11.2014 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Betty Jukes was honored by Keep Houston Beautiful as one of 35 people who have “changed Houston for the better in the past 35 years”; and WHEREAS, Betty Jukes founded the Junior Woman’s Club of Houston, which raised millions of dollars for Houston hospitals, the arts and other causes; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Jukes launched an endowment to establish the Charles A. Lindbergh Memorial that supports conservationists, explorers and scientists; and WHEREAS, Betty Jukes helped astronaut and Rear Admiral Alan Shepard launch a fund that evolved into the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation of today; and WHEREAS, Georgetown is fortunate to call Betty Jukes one of its own, an extraordinary organizer, fund-raiser and volunteer; and WHEREAS, when the Georgetown Symphony Society was $40,000 in debt at the end of a season, Betty Jukes led the “Save Our Symphony” (SOS) effort and the organization ended the following season with a healthy surplus; and WHEREAS, it is through Betty Jukes’ initial urging that the City of Georgetown now has a Commission on Aging and Mrs. Jukes co-chaired the first fund-raising luncheon to honor “Women Aging with Grace and Dignity”; and WHEREAS, Betty Jukes has enriched our community with her support of the arts, both performing and fine arts and both youth and senior programs. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2014 as BETTY JUKES DAY In Georgetown, Texas
