PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Georgetown Noon Lions Club was organized on September 24, 1923, only
six years after the first International Lions Club formed, with 25 charter members dedicated to
serving the community; and
WHEREAS, charter members included community leaders such as Thomas E. Lee,
Superintendent of Schools, Sam Stone, Tax Collector and later County Judge for 35 years, Professor
J.C. Godbey, SU Professor of Chemistry, Owen W. Sherrill, influential area realtor, H.E. Moore,
County Clerk and R.W. Tinsley, SU Professor of Biology/Geology, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, one charter member, Judge Harry Graves, was chief prosecutor on the team
headed by District Attorney Dan Moody, future governor of Texas, taking on the Ku Klux Klan;
and
WHEREAS, in more recent years we have continued to have members who play or have
played a vital role in our community, names such as William S. Lott, Jack Frost, Jim Gunn, Leo
Wood, “Pop” Williams, Will Kelley McClain, Buster Compton, Don Hewlett, Billy Bob Eanes, Dick
Cervenka, Neal Boyston, Bud Jordan, Charles Forbes, Joe McCook, Marvin Henderson, Gene Jacob,
Merritt Romans, Bob McKay, Claude Hays, Bill Connor, Parker McCollough, Jim McCullough,
Grady Anderson, Armpy Davis, Bill Edminston, Dale Hoffman, Jerry Kieschnick, Charlie Steger,
Don Bizzel and others; and
WHEREAS, the numerous fundraisers over the years to provide the funds needed for
important service projects have not only received good community support for these events but
generated opportunities for community fellowship; and
WHEREAS, the Georgetown Noon Lions Club continues to have members who are
committed to fulfilling our Lions Motto “We Serve”.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2013
