HomeMy WebLinkAboutWesley Chapel Day_07.2013 P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, Wesley Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgetown is 144 years old, having been organized in 1869 by Richard Haywood, and is the first independent black church in Georgetown; and WHEREAS, the current building was built in 1904, under the direction of Rev. J.A. Jones; and WHEREAS, on Sunday, July 21, 2013, Wesley Chapel will celebrate with the theme of “The People Had a Mind to Work” with special guest Rev. Dr. Mark Washington and the Vision of Hope A.M.E. Church of Austin, Texas; and WHEREAS, Wesley Chapel was recorded in the Texas Historical Landmarks in 1984, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986; and is also listed in the 1999 African Americans in Texas Historical and Cultural Legacies; and WHEREAS, the members of the Wesley Chapel Family have been recipients of many blessings from God and they thank God for all blessings large and small. To God be the glory!; and WHEREAS, on November 14, 2009, Rev. Silas Swint was appointed as Pastor of Wesley Chapel, and during his administration, the Wesley Chapel Family has taken on many ongoing projects to enhance their house of worship; and WHEREAS, the Wesley Chapel Family has made a commitment to remain a permanent presence and contributor to our fine community; and WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that we observe a day when all in our community may acknowledge the importance of the role of Wesley Chapel AME church in the community; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown congratulates Wesley Chapel AME Church on their 144th Anniversary. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim Sunday, July 21, 2013, as WESLEY CHAPEL DAY
