Hello Arts and Culture Folks,
I got back from vacation and going through my e-mail this afternoon, I got a pleasant surprise. The Cultural District
Designation Panel has recommended to the Texas Commission on the Arts commissioners that Georgetown be
designated a cultural district at their September meeting.
This is great news for our City.
Thanks,
Eric P. Lashley

Subject: Cultural District Designation
August 12, 2013
Dear Eric:
I am writing today to inform you that the Cultural District Designation Evaluation Panel working for the
Texas Commission on the Arts have recommended the Georgetown Cultural District be designated in
2013. The governing board of the Texas Commission on the Arts will deliberate on this
recommendation at their September 5, 2013 meeting. The meeting will be held in the E.O. Thompson
State Office Building on the 7th Floor starting at 9:00 a.m. The meeting is open to the public and you
are welcome to observe the meeting. There is an opportunity for public comment during the meeting.
Scores and comments from evaluators are attached to this email. The nurturing and management of
a cultural district is a long term commitment that takes a substantial amount of support, commitment
and capability by the organization asking for designation.
Please feel free to contact me and I will visit with you by phone.

Georgetown Cultural District
Recommended for Designation YES Panel Score: 930
Evaluator Comments:
Fortune Magazine named Georgetown one of the best places to live in the US, and the cultural amenities of the city
certainly contribute to this claim.
The proposed cultural district coincides with the historic district and this is smart planning.
Georgetown's cultural assets are very rich and seem to be growing regularly.
The proposed cultural district is in a great location that will attract visitors.
The city is building a great public art program, and this will be important in attracting visitors and citizens to the
cultural district.
The calendar has many events that focus on the arts and this is great product that can be promoted and marketed to
visitors.
• This community seems to work across all platforms in their marketing efforts. This strategy seems to be very
beneficial for the community.
There are some challenges for development in the proposed cultural district when considering zoning and the very
stringent regulations for architecture review. However, these zoning regulations and architecture review have kept
the integrity of the downtown cohesive and are important to keep in place.
The evaluators noted that there are plans for a downtown amphitheater and an art park that will enhance the
proposed cultural district.
The panel was impressed with the budget and felt that it could support the cultural district effort.
The City of Georgetown has placed building the downtown as a signature destination as a primary goal in their
master plan and the cultural district will go a long way in making this goal a reality.
The community has a reinvestment zone in place, and this is a key component for development and investment.
Application lacked information regarding how individual artists are involved. It is important that artists have a voice on
the governing body for the proposed cultural district.
The support by the City of Georgetown is very important to the success of this application.
This community is moving forward and it is exciting.
