Arts and Culture Board

December 12, 2017
The Arts and Culture Board met on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in the Staff
Conference Room of Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8t" Street, Georgetown, TX.
PRESENT: Jane Estes, Tim Fleming, Wes Odell, Laura Sewell, and Linda Wilde.
ABSENT: Sharon Snuffer and Carol Watson
STAFF PRESENT: Eric Lashley- Library Director, Dana Hendrix -Fine Arts Librarian and Lawren
Weiss -Administrative Assistant.
OTHERS PRESENT: Amanda Still, citizen
Chair Estes called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm.
A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. — Jane Estes, Board Chair. Citizen
Amanda Still was present to interview the board on item D. No action required.
B. Announcements regarding arts and culture in Georgetown._ Jane Estes, Board
Chair. Board members discussed local arts and culture events, exhibits and
projects. No action required.
C. Review of minutes from the November 14, 2017 Arts & Culture Board meeting. —
Jane Estes, Board Chair. Motion by Fleming; second by Wilde to approve
November's minutes. Approved 5-0 (Snuffer and Watson absent).
D. Interview of the board by University of Denver graduate student Amanda Still for
class project. — Eric Lashley, Library Director. Still interviewed the board for her
capstone project regarding marketing arts and culture in Georgetown. Discussion
followed about marketing retention strategies and a community wide loyalty
program. No action required.
E. Review of monthly report from Georgetown Art Works. —Eric Lashley, Library
Director. Lashley reported that staff had not received a report from Georgetown
Art Works for the second month in a row. Board members asked Lashley to
remind GAW that a monthly report is required per the Operating Agreement with
the City. No action required.

discussed possible interview questions provided by Lashley and Odell (attached)
Lashley reported that he, Dana Hendrix, Cari Miller with the Convention and
Visitors Bureau, Jamie Beran with Parks & Recreation and Chair Jane Estes will
sit on the interview panel for the part-time Arts and Culture Coordinator position.
No action required.

Arts and Culture Coordinator
1. Do you have any questions for us?
2. Are you able to meet the physical requirements for this position as
stated in the job description?

4. Why do you want this position? If hired, what would you like to do
with this position?
5. What 3 qualities and skills do you consider important for this position?
6. How did you prepare for this interview?
7. Can you tell me about your experience working with social media and
websites?

9. Building and keeping good relationships is critical to this position.
How would you go about building and keeping a good relationship
with someone you fundamentally disagree with on major issues?
10. This position serves as a staff liaison for the Arts and Culture Board.
Have you worked with volunteer boards in the past?
11. Scenarios:
a. You receive a call from a City Councilmember who is upset with
one of the downtown sculptures. They claim the sculpture is
obscene. What do you do?
b. The Arts and Culture Board requests proposals for a downtown
mural. The board reviews the proposals and selects an artist.
Before you contact the artist to let them know they have been
selected, you receive information the artist was arrested for
possession of child pornography, but was not prosecuted and all
charges were dropped? What do you do?
c. The Arts and Culture Board has been asked by a downtown
building owner to commission a mural honoring George
Washington Glasscock. Georgetown is named after Glasscock.
The Board agrees and during the call for mural proposals, a
Letter to the Editor is published in the Williamson County Sun by
a resident claiming they are a descendant from a slave owned by
Glasscock and objects to the City spending tax dollars for a mural
honoring Glasscock. How would you deal with this information?
What would you recommend the Arts and Culture Board do with
this information? (After candidate has answered this part of the
scenario, ask the following question) The Arts and Culture Board
decides to go forward with the mural project. A councilmember
who is against the mural places an item on the council agenda to
try and stop the project. How would you prepare for the council
meeting?
12. If you were asked to coordinate a public art project that was going to
be created by members of the community of all ages, what steps
would be necessary to organize such a project?
13. In this position, you will be working with staff members of various
City departments. If hired, how would you organize your first 30, 60,
or 90 days? How would you know if you were doing a good job?
14. Tell us about a leadership experience of yours of which you are
proud.
15. What are your greatest professional strengths? What are your
greatest professional weaknesses?
16. One goal of the Arts and Culture Board is to increase diversity in the
arts in terms of audience and participation. How would you work to
increase diversity in the arts?
