The Parks and Recreation Board of the City of Georgetown, Texas, met on Thursday , April 14, 2011.

Minutes
Regular Meeting
1.Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Robert Laemel at 7:00 pm.
2.Roll Call
3.Discuss the 2011/2012 budget process to obtain input from Advisory
Board – Finance Department
Laurie Brewer, Finance Director for the City of Georgetown, introduced herself
and explained the budget process and reviewed the March 9, 2010 citizen’s
survey. Laurie Brewer explained the Boards and Commissions Budget Input
survey and provided a survey for each of the Board members to fill out. She
stated that City Council would like to see board goals collectively. Laurie Brewer
requests the results of the survey from the board by the end of May.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will discuss and prioritize the board
goals at the parks tour meeting tentatively scheduled for April 28th.
4.Update from Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation
Jean Houck presented the newly designed Parks Pals T-shirt that Georgetown
Shirt Company has donated. The last two membership drives at the Recreation
Center and Tennis Center generated 48 new members with a total of 72 members
now. The Georgetown Swims program is on going. Houck stated the program
started with the Georgetown Boys and Girls Club and the public is now requesting
to be part of the program. The Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation have
developed an application for people to apply for swim lessons. Jean Houck was
able to secure a $1,000.00 donation from the San Gabriel Women’s Club. This is
their special project for the coming year. They are also donating volunteer hours
and will provide goggles, swim caps, flip flops and towels for the Georgetown
Swim’s program.
5.Discussion of Parks and Recreation Monthly Review for February
and March
Shane Morris stated that he noticed the increase in membership card activity at the
Recreation Center. Jim Hailey likes the monthly review and asked if it is posted
on the website as he feels it would be good for the public to see what is happening
in the Parks and Recreation Department. Kimberly Garrett stated we will look
into putting it on the website. Robert Laemel asked if the Monthly Review is
being distributed to the City Council. Kimberly Garrett stated the City Manager is
distributing to the City Council.
6.Recognition to Georgetown Parks and Recreation for receiving the
TRAPS Gold Medal Award
Kimberly Garrett stated Georgetown Parks and Recreation received the Texas
Recreation and Parks Society Gold Medal Award for the 4th time for a city in
Class 4 which is for city’s under 50,000. Robert Laemel suggested the Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board write a letter to the Parks and Recreation Director to
congratulate the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department staff for winning
this award.
7.Discussion on tour of the Parks for the Parks Board members
Kimberly Garrett will schedule the tour of the parks and let board members know
the date and time.
8.Discussion on July 2011 Plans for National Parks and Recreation
Month
Kimberly Garrett stated the mayor will proclaim July as National Parks and
Recreation Month. It was suggested to get the community involved by
creating a list of activities to do within the parks and recreation system such as
visiting the parks, walking on the trail or swimming at a local pool. The board
will look into advertising the events through the local news media and
displaying a banner in the community.
9.Approve minutes from the March 10, 2011 meeting
Jim Hailey stated “was” was left out for item #6, Discussion on inclusion and
what the budget involvement would be for the programs for 2012. Jim Hailey
made a motion to approve the amended minutes and the motion was
seconded by Syed Warisi and the motion passed by unanimous vote.
10.Future agenda items
·Discuss budget survey results to present to City Manager for 2011/2012
budget process
·South Gabriel River Trail concept
·Discussion on the July 2011 National Park/Rec Month with preparation of
list of activities
11.Adjourn
Jean Houck made a motion to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at
8:15 pm.
