HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_03.10.1992GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING March 10, 1992 12:00 noon Library Board Room Present: Mary Beth Huba (presiding), Jean Marie Mendez, Morton King, Pat Ball, Judi Shanklin, Tomi Spence, Tresa Long (arrived at 1:00), and Mary Pat McLaughlin. Absent: John Duer, Robert Horick The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m. 1. Morton King moved and Judi Shanklin seconded the adoption of the minutes. The motion passed unanimously. 2. Hartley Sappington recommended to M.P. McLaughlin that the Board drop the proposed amendment to the Meeting Room Policy, as it opens the library to future problems. Judi Shanklin made a motion that the previously approved policy remain in effect, rescinding the amended paragraph. Morton King seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. 3. Mary Pat asked for suggestions on priorities for the budget. The consensus of the Board was that areas needing to be targeted are additional staff (possibly including a full time reference librarian), non fiction materials, and keeping the children's room staffed full time. Another problem discussed was the need to make it easier for patrons to alert the staff if they cannot find something. Tresa Long arrived. 4. Jean Marie Mendez reported on the Long Range Planning Committee, which met Friday, February 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the library. The four members present were J.M. Mendez <presiding), Mary Beth Huba, John Duer and Tomi Spence, as well as Mary Pat McLaughlin. Jean Marie distributed the current mission statement and a patron survey conducted two summers ago to the committee members. M.P. McLaughlin is making up a list of current library services for the committee to study, and the committee is looking into surveys conducted by other organizations as a possible source of information on library patrons. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday March 27 at 12:30 p.m. in the library, at which time we hope to have a speaker from CTLS on long range planning. page 2 of 2 5. Mary Pat reported that the library will receive some live trees thanks to the Parks and Recreation Department. She also said that she is interviewing applicants for the Head of Circulation. The meeting adjourned at l: 10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, J&7� 49—'� Tomi Spence Secretary MONTHLY REPORT LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR MARCH 1992 WNREMMEM Lee Sparks has been hired as Head of Circulation. Lee has a Masters in Library Science. Howard Harrison ' a Green Thumb employee, will be working at the LibrarY 40 hours a week. He will help set up for meetings and do special cleaning. ADMINISTRATION I spoke to both the EBONY and TEACH organization meetings about the HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE programs. I participated in a program for the Rotary Club on City services. PROGRAMMING In March there were three exhibits in the Library, A one week display of quilts was displayed to compliment the Quilt Show. Williams Middle School att students exhibited their works in the main cases, The Girl Scouts provided a display on the Reference cases to celebrate the anniversary of Girl Scouts in America. The Homework Assistance Program has started. Southwestern University students from the EBONY and TEACH organizations are at the Library on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings to help elementary, rywiddle school, Jr. high and high school students with homework. Some of the EBONY students have been tutoring high school students on a regular basis, TOOTER and GINGER SNAP, clowns from the C'ircus presented a free program in the Children's department. COLLECTION Three new reference sets have been added to the collection by the Library Board, covering American literature, English writers and major, artists of the world., FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY Kat.hlee Holinans represented the Society for the Preservation of the Gentle Art of Reading Aloud by reading to the staff of the Juvenile Detention Center- as the program for their staff meeting.
