March 10, 1992 12:00 noon
Library Board Room
Present: Mary Beth Huba (presiding), Jean Marie Mendez, Morton
King, Pat Ball, Judi Shanklin, Tomi Spence, Tresa Long (arrived at
1:00), and Mary Pat McLaughlin.
Absent: John Duer, Robert Horick
The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m.
1. Morton King moved and Judi Shanklin seconded the adoption of
the minutes. The motion passed unanimously.
2. Hartley Sappington recommended to M.P. McLaughlin that the
Board drop the proposed amendment to the Meeting Room Policy, as it
opens the library to future problems. Judi Shanklin made a motion
that the previously approved policy remain in effect, rescinding the
amended paragraph. Morton King seconded the motion, which passed
unanimously.
3. Mary Pat asked for suggestions on priorities for the budget.
The consensus of the Board was that areas needing to be targeted are
additional staff (possibly including a full time reference librarian),
non fiction materials, and keeping the children's room staffed full
time. Another problem discussed was the need to make it easier for
patrons to alert the staff if they cannot find something.
Tresa Long arrived.
4. Jean Marie Mendez reported on the Long Range Planning
Committee, which met Friday, February 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the library.
The four members present were J.M. Mendez <presiding), Mary Beth Huba,
John Duer and Tomi Spence, as well as Mary Pat McLaughlin. Jean Marie
distributed the current mission statement and a patron survey
conducted two summers ago to the committee members. M.P. McLaughlin
is making up a list of current library services for the committee to
study, and the committee is looking into surveys conducted by other
organizations as a possible source of information on library patrons.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday March 27 at 12:30 p.m. in the
library, at which time we hope to have a speaker from CTLS on long
range planning.
