HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_12.14.1993GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD December 14, 1993 12:00 p.m. Library Board Room Present: Morton King, Pat Ball, Jean Marie Mendez, Tomi Spence, Mary Beth Huba, Mary Pat McLaughlin, Robert Horick (arrived at 12:05 p.m.), Tresa Long (arrived at 12:10 p.m.) Absent: Rhonda McCollough, Martin Beeman Called to order at 12:02 p.m. 1. Morton King moved to approve the minutes as circulated, seconded by Pat Ball and passed with Jean Marie Mendez abstaining. 2. Mary Beth Huba read a letter from Sharon Miller of Hutto addressed to the Board and Mary Pat McLaughlin in which she spoke against censorship and the white covers on the magazine collection. 3. The Material Display Policy has not been finalized. The committee will continue and another meeting will be scheduled. Discussion was held on the possibility of forming a committee to deal with citizen complaints. No consensus was reached. 4. Morton King made a motion that the opaque covers be removed from the magazine collection immediately, seconded by Robert Horick. Mary Pat McLaughlin asked that the covers remain until a display policy is in effect. The motion was amended to require the opaque covers to be removed as of January 15. Jean Mendez moved to table the motion until the next meeting, seconded by Tresa Long and passed with Robert Horick, Morton King and Pat Ball abstaining. Mary Beth Huba cast the tie breaking vote to carry the motion. 5. The Materials Selection Policy was reviewed by the Board, and some changes made. Jean Mendez moved to accept the Materials Selection Policy as edited, second by Robert Horick and passed unanimously. Jean commended the committee for its excellent work. 6. Tresa Long moved to accept the holiday closing schedule for 1994, seconded by Morton King and passed unanimously. On a motion by Morton King seconded by Robert Horick and passed unanimously, the meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted, jav+ -'Z t'w�� Tomi Spence Secretary Draft 3 1-5-94 DISPLAY POLICY FOR THE GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY In keeping with the definition of display meaning "present to view", materials on display in the COMMON PUBLIC AREAS will be selected by the Library staff for their cultural, educational, and/or informative merits. COMMON PUBLIC AREAS are areas used by Library customers of all ages and with a variety of interests. These areas include, but are not limited to the FOYER, MEETING ROOMS, REFERENCE AND CIRCULATION DESK AREAS and DISPLAY CASES. Displays may include, but are not limited to new materials, topical or thematic groupings of materials, and items related to the interests of library patrons. Materials displayed should be objective, and from a source generally regarded as authoritative and should not be related to religious proselytizing, Political campaigning or direct fund- raising. All displays provided by outside sources will be reviewed for appropriateness by the Library staff. Materials not chosen for display, but available in the Library, will be shelved in appropriately designated sections which maximize effective use of library space. Items displayed in the CHILDREN'S ROOM will pertain to activities or topics of general interest to children 12 Years of age and under. Art will continue to be displayed as per the current art policy. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS: As space allows, the Library will display announcements of community events and give- away materials (such as brochures, pamphlets, flyers, bookmarks) for non-profit groups. Priority will be given to Library, City and City -related materials. All announcements and give away -materials must be reviewed by Library staff. Such materials should be objective and should not be related to religious proselytizing, Political campaigning or direct fund- raising. All non -library materials should be clearly marked with the name of the sponsoring agency. Items left for Posting cannot be returned and the Library reserves the right to dispose of such materials as it sees fit. PERSONNEL Judy Fabry and Ralph Love joined the staff as Library Pages, responsible for shelving materials and processing books. COLLECTION As part of the Program Development, the Library closed for a pre - inventory shelf reading. In four hours, the staff was able to check 3/4 of the adult collection. PROGRAMMING Special holiday programming for the children included a performance by the Small Wonders Puppet Theater and a visit from Santa. The Society for the Preservation of the Gentle Art of Reading Aloud met to share seasonal readings. Morton King moved to accept the minutes as circulated, seconded by Pat Ball and passed with Jean Mendez abstaining. 2. Mary Flat reported that the lapel pins ordered from the ALA for staff members had arrived and will be distributed to the staff. She thanked the Board again for the pins. Robert Iforick had nothing new to report on security cameras or computer, at this time. The members expressed their thanks to Mary Beth Huba for the refreshments she provided. Pat Ball made a motion to adjourn at 1:25 p.m., seconded by Tresa Long and passed unanimously.
