HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_08.11.1997i I I Georgetown Public Library Advisory Board Library Board Room August 11, 1997 Present: Sheila Henderson, Amy Anderson, Michelle Crider, Greg Gibbons, Nell Dickson, Sally Riddle; Nelda Burson and Lay Representative Rebecca Pfiester Absent: Martin Beeman and Sharon Sanders Amy Anderson called the meeting to order. The minutes of the July 14,1997 meeting were approved as written with a motion from Nell, a second from Nelda and a passing vote. Sheila said there were positive comments from citizens. Patrons are donating money and wantingl?olunteer also. There were no comments from the Chair. Review of New Board Member applications: Sheila read the names of the people who had applied and asked the board members to comment on any of the applicants. Greg gave the presentation that he will be giving for the city council on Aug 12, 1997 at 5:30 p.m.. Sheila pointed out the new items on the Library Budget which were approved and some Q that were not approved. V � Michelle presented a rough draft brochure for promoting the library and the foundation. 1 There was no New Business. Nelda moved to adjourn the meeting, Nell seconded, the motion passed. Murray Blackman From: Sheila Ross Henderson Subject: Library Board Member, Daniel Castro Date: July 18, 1997 i Board member Daniel Castro has attended one meeting (April) since his appointment. He notified me that he would not be present at the March meeting and for the May 30-31 Board/Staff retreat. However, I have not heard from him since then. We are assuming that he has been receiving his board packets each month as the postal service has not returned them. Additionally, Board chairperson Amy Anderson has left several messages on his voice mail from which she has rec1 eived no response. According to the City Utility Office, Dr. Castro now resides in Austin. Please advise further action. SRH cc. Library Board: I i l 40 MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY July, 1997 Highlights Effective July 1,1997, the Library was moved front the Division of Information Resources to the Division of Parks and Recreation. This change marked the beginning of efforts to collaborate with the Georgetown Project and work toward a better community in which support for our youth will be demonstrated on every corner, with every organization and through each individual residing in the Community. The newly formed division will be renamed in the near future. I El Grande finale for the Summer Reading Program was held on July 31. As with all the reading program events, the attendance was tremendous. Ms. Rosa and her staff of volunteer's and fellow co-workers are to be commended for another successful program. I STAFF -Out and About.' On July $, Craig Dowell, Lee Sparks, Kathleen Bowling, Eric Lashley, Rosa Garcia and Crisfy McNicholas began the personal development classes given by EOS. On July 1,1, Eric Lashley and Lee Sparks attended a First Search database workshop sponsored by CTLS at the Temple Library. Sheila Henderson attended a follow-up meeting of the Shotgun House Committee on July 16. The invited guest presenter was unable to attend. Sheila Henderson attended a two day TLA conference in Austin on July 20 and 21. She was appointed chair of the nominating committee far TLA District III and appointed as Intellectual Freedom Committee Member Liaison to District II1. 3 t i On July 22, Cristy McNicholas attended a workshop in Austin on creative ways to promote your business with brochures, newsletters and flyers. Lee Sparks attended a geographical database seminar on July 22, at UT -Austin. Cristy MI Nicholas attended a one dayseminar in Austin on using July 28. 1 s ng the World Wide Web, l On July 29, Sheila Henderson attended a meeting with the Georgetown Project and GISD Middle School Principals to discuss strategies for eliminating alcohol, drug, and gang activities from the schools. She co-chairs the Tippit School group with Jean Ehnebuske. Ralph Love and Lee Sparks attended a genealogy workshop on July 31, in San Antonio. j i ADMINISTRA I WIN Ruby Rocha started on July 14 as Library Assistant - Circulation. Mark Peterson's last day was July 9th, and Daniel Roblez our Summer Youth worker, said goodbye on July 24. { PROGRAMMING 3 With the Summer Reading Program in full swing, the events just kept getting better. The children enjoyed decorating pots for the 4th, painting, origami, and making puppets, and masks. They were awe struck by the wonders of magic, the special tricks displayed by the trained dogs and the huge machines that make this city run. The tea party with the American Girls, and a zoo show were also big hits with the children. On the creative side, the children were given the opportunity to draw animals, people, and landscapes. Some of these pictures are now on display in the display cases. To end the 8-week program Ms Rosa invited all involved to attend a party at a nearby park. The kid's played games, had their faces painted and were entertained by a fairy princess, and a clown. Pizza, punch and other goodies were devoured by all. VOLUNTEERS Ms Julie Fuschak has been volunteering at the Library for over 2 years and in that time has spent many hours helping Dixie Hanna organize her book lists and doing other tasks. Recently she spent her time diligently writing out the order slips for all those new books Dixie has requested. It's a tiring task but someone has to do it and we thank her for her dedication to the Library. FRIEND'S OF THE LIBRARY FUTURE PLANS!!! I Library!Staff grill attend Austin Public Library/CTLS Staff Development Day on August 15. Sally .mended the minutes of the last meeting to include Trisha Wilhohn's last name. The minutes of the July 14,1997 meeting were approved as amended wi a motion from Sally, a second from Nell and a passing vote. Sally presented the proposed theme and invitation for the Gala. Discussion included the fact that the speaker and ballroom will not be available on the same date. The board entertained the idea of moving the gala to the spring. Sheila said she would find out if there is a date when Cactus Pryor and the Sun City Ballroom are both available and that also does not conflict with any events of the city's 150 birthday celebration. The 501(c)(3) board's 97/98 budget was proposed. After some discussion about where the board generally wants money spent, Greg volunteered to propose a new budget at the next meeting. Greg presented a treasurer's report. Old Business: Sally presented some possible Library Foundation logos and asked each member to pick their favorite and give any input. The blue open book was the favorite and Rebecca suggested adding another color or two to the logo. The city gift fund was presented in a hand out. New Business: The board discussed having a workshop to update the Long Range Plan. The board also discussed having a special meeting to talk about forming the foundation. No special meeting was scheduled, some board members would like to vote next month on the by-laws and articles of incorporation that have already been presented. The meeting was adjourned by a motion from Greg and second from Nell and a passing vote.
