[EXTERNAL] FW: Hello Fellow Commissioners on Aging!
Below is a draft letter of appeal to the Commissioner on Aging members. If you will please add info to
the red areas and then forward the correspondence, it will be a good start to shoring up the foundation
for the commission. I think once we know the level of commitment from the existing 6 members, we
can start to develop a framework, tasks and direction (a mission so to speak(D).
Thank you,
Kathleen
Dear Fellow Commissioners on Aging,
We had a great meeting Monday June 17th; however, we MISSED YOU!. George, Terri and I
were the current three of six members in attendance. Because a quorum requires five or more
members, we had an informal yet valuable meeting. We, along with community attendees (Linda
White --City Hall Administrative Assistant, Chief Sullivan -Georgetown Fire Dept, Patrick Lloyd -
Library Social Worker, Patricia Bordie- Area Agency on Aging, and *add name of QA city staff
) engaged in a wholehearted conversation around the great needs of those aging in our
community as well as the depth of heart that brings each of us to this Commission.
I learned that George and I share the experience of losing a parent to Alzheimer's. Linda shared
an overview with us on the Commission's accomplishments such as (of course) establishing a
home for the first annual Vibrant Living Event as well as areas of great influence such as local
Adult Day Care, the Social Work role at the library, transportation, hospice care and aging
research. These accomplishments have had a positive impact on folks in this community — in
part due to the Commission's work.
The Commission received three resignations last month which leaves now just six members. All
at this meeting agreed that a strong commitment by six members can lead this important
work. However with the smaller number, our organization and commitment must be clear. For
example, only one member could be absent from any monthly meeting in order to maintain a
quorum and conduct business.
We are percolating some ideas to develop clear direction for the Commission and the structure
needed to guide a few strong committed members. That structure is proposed to be developed in
areas that align with but are not driven by the Age -Friendly Initiative. They include: (please list
these categories: transportation, socialization, etc.). With agreement from the Commissioners,
we can begin to develop these plans and our role to effectively guide healthy aging in
Georgetown.
Each of us so understands how lives change and things happen, so please share where you are in
life and as a member of the Commission on Aging; what you want and can do at this time. You
are much appreciated for your interest, knowledge, passion and efforts to effect positive change
in the lives of others.
Best,
Kathleen Hopkins

Based on the city's interpretation of the rules governing a commission like ours, I believe we are
supposed to forward all correspondence through Linda White. This ensures that we don't discuss any
Commission matters outside of the actual meetings.
Thanks so much
God bless

Thanks Terri,
I appreciate the input and respect the fact that you are new to the Commission and may not feel poised
to sign a letter to the others. I really like the idea of a phone call as maybe a better method of
contact. If you and George could really weigh in on the 'right message' I would be happy to call the
other 3 members to relay.
Thanks so much,
Kathleen

Thank you, Kathleen, for taking the initiative on this! I'm sorry to my delayed
response. I do think personal phone calls may be more effective. I do not know the
members and I am new. Moreover! I wonder which kind of political situation(s) are
affecting the current status. Still I have provided feedback on your letter as
requested. This is your letter so feel free to personalize it.

Hello,
Below is a draft for you all to add/edit for an appeal to the remaining 3 Commissioners to band -
together and find direction for this privileged and very important work in Georgetown. I would
like to get this to Linda by tomorrow to send out to all if we can. Thanks guys — Kathleen
Dear Fellow Commissioners on Aging,
We had a great meeting Monday June 17'`% however, we MISSED YOU! In your absence, we
invested time in discussing the seriousness of structure that is fiercely needed for the
Commission on Aging. George, Terri and I were the only Commissioners in attendance. We
and the community attendees (Linda White --City Hall Administrative Assistant, Chief
Sullivan -Georgetown Fire Dept, Patrick Lloyd -Library Social Worker, Patricia Bordie- Area
Agency on Aging, and add name of QA city staff ) engaged in a wholehearted conversation
discussing the great needs of those aging in our community as well as the depth of heart that
brings each of us to this Commission.
I learned at George and I shared the experience of losing a parent to Alzheimers and more
about the Commission on Aging's accomplishments such as of course The Vibrant Living
Event as well as great influence in areas to establish Adult Day Care, the history of the city
staffing a Social Worker at the Libraryas well as in the areas of transportation, hospice care
and aging research. Let's band -together and take this Commission to the next level.
The Commission received three resignations in the last month which leaves us with only
six members on the Council. We believe that a strong Commission will not be hindered by
this smaller number. With that limited number we can only have one member absent at
each meeting to maintain a quorum and conduct business.
We are committed and are percolating some ideas to develop a strong membership and the
structure needed to guide our strong, few, committed members. That structure is proposed to
be developed in areas that are aligned but not driven by the Age -Friendly Initiative. They
include: (please list these categories: transportation, socialization, etc.). So there you have it, a
simple yet passionate appeal.
We know you want to do good or you would not have jumped through the hoops to get
yourself appointed to this City of Georgetown Commission. I left you a voicemail as I
am eager to hear what is happening in your life and if you are able to continue your
role with the Council.
Best,
Kathleen Hopkins
