Georgetown Commission on Aging

July 15, 2019
The City of Georgetown Commission on Aging met on July 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Safety
Facility, located at 3500 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, TX 78633.
The City of Georgetown is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require assistance in

Regular Session
(This Regular session may, at any time, be recessed to convene an Executive Session for any purpose authorized by the Open
Meetings Act, Texas Government Code 551.)
A. Call to Order - Past Vice -Chair, Ginny Hahn, called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Board
members Sharon Covey, Ginny Hahn, George Lourigan, Terri Michelle and Jerry Nicklen were
present, with Kathleen Hopkins, Susan Wells, Cass Wheeler absent, thus constituting a quorum
(one position remaining vacant). Also present was Linda White, Administrative Assistant, Staff
Liaison support to the Commission.
B. Introductions of current and newly appointed Board members — newly appointed member,
Terri Michelle, was introduced to the Commission.
Legislative Regular Agenda
C. Nomination and Election of a Board Vice -Chair — Ginny Hahn, Past Vice -Chair. A motion was
made and seconded to nominate George Lourigan for the position of Board Vice -Chair. The Board
was unanimous in electing George Lourigan as the Board Vice -Chair. (5-0)
D. Nomination and Election of a Board Secretary — Ginny Hahn, Past Vice -Chair. A motion was
made and seconded to nominate Jerry Nicklen for the position of Board Secretary. The Board was
unanimous in electing Jerry Nicklen as the Board Secretary. (5-0)
E. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes of the meeting held on April 15, 2019
— Ginny Hahn, Past Vice -Chair. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from
the meeting held on April 15, 2019. The Board was unanimous in approving the April 15, 2019
minutes. (5-0). The Commission shared their preference to have the minutes list the names of the
individual members present at each meeting along with the already listed names of those absent.
Beginning with the minutes from the July 15`h meeting, all names will be listed.
F. Discussion and possible action for an Age -Friendly Community Designation for the City of
Georgetown — Sharon Covey, Commission on Aging. Discussion occurred. Sharon shared that
she would prepare an overview of the Age -Friendly Community Designation and its involvement,
send to Linda for distribution to the Commission. David Morgan, City Manager, will be attending
the August 19`" meeting to discuss with the Commission.

G. Discussion and possible action of Priority Initiatives — Communication, Transportation,
Dental Care, Affordable Housing, Mental Health, Legal Aid — Ginny Hahn, Past Vice -Chair.
Discussion occurred regarding each of the Priority Initiatives. Overall the Commission's desire is
to connect with the senior residents living in Georgetown in order to become more aware of their
wellbeing, issues, needs, etc. Questions arose as to what options might there be for the Commission
on Aging to reach out to seniors? Would City Management support the Commission on Aging
reaching out to senior residents, and what ways would City Management suggest to accomplish
reaching out to residents? These and other concerns will be discussed with Mr. Morgan during the
August meeting.
H. Discussion of future agendas and priorities — Ginny Hahn, Past Vice -Chair. Patty Bordie,
Director, Aging Services, CAPCOG, will present either in August or September.
Adjournment
The next Commission meeting will be Monday, August 19, 2019 at 6:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Facility,
3500 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, Texas.
The meeting adjourned at 7:32 p.m. on a motion by George Lourigan, seconded by Jerry Nicklen, which
the Board approved unanimously. (5-0)

Georgetown Commission on Aging
The Georgetown Commission on Aging advises the City Council on the needs and status of seniors in the entire
City, recommending ways in which those needs may be met.
• This board serves as a liaison between the City Council and the community of senior citizens in matters of
public interest.
• The Commission will determine and assess existing resources in the City which may be utilized by seniors
to meet their needs.
• The Commission will evaluate and assess proposed programs, grants and other governmental activities
which may impact seniors.
• They will encourage, promote, assist and safeguard the rights and abilities of older adults throughout the
community to maintain maximum health, well-being and independence.
• The Commission will use all available resources to inform senior citizens of Community Services in health,
nutrition, recreation, housing, transportation and safety.
• They will receive input from the senior citizen community, including input from other individuals and
organizations on issues relevant to the senior community.
• The Commission acts as liaison for senior citizen issues to governmental and private organizations, as well.

Projects and accomplishments since inception:
• Reviewed and updated senior citizen demographic data since original survey
• Explored and reviewed over 30 local organizations serving the elderly
• Helped secure additional funding for Faith in Action transportation initiative
• Promoted the creation of a Community Resources Coordinator at the Georgetown Public Library
• Developing recommendations for communicating the availability of various services to senior
residents, including electronic and printed materials
• Supporting the initiative to establish an Adult Day Care facility in Georgetown
• Participated in the feasibility study for an inpatient hospice facility
• Created and provided the Georgetown Planning Department with an "elder friendly" brochure for
distribution to developers working locally
• Recommended and supported the launch of a Senior Services expo event in April 2019
