HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_04.15.2002Georgetown Public Library Advisory Board Meeting Minutes April 15, 2002 In Attendance: Judy Parks, Dorothy Hagen, Jackie Cuozzo, Judy Griffith, Ema Fielder, Georgene Richaud, Zora Evans, Gerald Carson. Jerry Sensabaugh. Eric Lashley, Library Director was also present. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM. The Chairman, Judy Parks, introduced the new member of the Board, Jerry Sensabaugh Approve Minutes: The minutes from the last Advisory Board meeting were reviewed. Corrections were noted to the spelling of two member's names. In addition a correction was made to the timing of the book sale this year It will be held concurrently with Market Days in Georgetown and not Mayfair. Zora Evans moved and Jackie Cuozzo seconded a motion to approve the minutes. The minutes were approved unanimously. Director's Report: Eric Lashley reported that the activities at the library during spring break went very well. Dunng Art Days at the library, digital pictures were taken of the children's art and will be placed on the Library s web site. The new computer system is going to become active in April. The library will receive 20 wireless laptop computers through the Community Network Grant but no date has been announced for delivery. Judy Fabry spoke to the Beta Sigma Phi sorority about library services that are available. Joe Pendleton from this library spent part of a day at the library in Waco then the libranan from Waco visited our library. Eric spoke at the monthly "Soapbox" event at Sun City on March 26t. The Friends of the Library are still collecting books for the upcoming book sale. Statistics are still up from last year. Eric will be in Dallas next week for a meeting of the TLA. There will be a breakfast held at the library on April 17th for the library volunteers, Friends of the Library and the Library Advisory Board. Chairman's Report to the City Council: Judy Parks briefed the Board on her report to the City Council. The Council will consider whether to fund forums on the library bond issue. The Council also informed her that the way to have the Library Long -Range Plan approved would be to have in incorporated into the City's Century Plan. The Century Plan would be amended to include the Long -Range Plan and this would have the effect of codifying the Ram Report of the Subcommittee on the Library's Long -Range Plan: Gerald Carson and Georgene Richaud briefed the Board on the meeting they had with Enc on the Long -Range Plan Some organizational changes were suggested and implemented including the incorporation of a time line. The Plan was color coded to indicate actions that could be taken with present funding, those that would require additional funding and those that would require a new or expanded facility. Announcements: Judy Parks announced that there would be a workshop for the Library Advisory Board and the City Council on June 24th or the 8th of July. Judy will finalize. Guest Speaker: Pat Tuohy, the Coordinator of the Texas Central Library System made a presentation to the board. Pats job is to help libraries develop Pat made some observations concerning the bond election and ways to improve the chance of passage of bond issues relating to librares. She also discussed some new programs that libraries are using to enhance their service to the community. The Long -Range Plan of this hbrary was discussed. Anyone with additional questions for Pat should refer them to Enc. Agenda Items for Next Meeting: Please refer any suggestions for agenda items to Judy or Eric. A request was made for a mailing list of board members to be sent with the minutes. There being no further business, Zora Evans moved and Dorothy Hagen seconded a motion to adjourn at 7 46PM. Totals may have been affected. DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT 0I GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY March 2002 HIGHLIGHTS • The Children's Room hummed with activity the week of spring break. Monday and Tuesday were art days and the artists' creations decorated the room for two weeks; Wednesday was talent day, when many youngsters demonstrated their abilities; and Thursday more than fifty young ladies attended the tea party in honor of Women's History Month • The Community Network Grant from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Board was approved. As a part of this program, the library will get 20 wireless laptop computers to use for public Internet access. April 2003 is the deadline for implementation of the proposed program. • Technical Services staff members finished cleaning up the catalog and patron records in preparation for the changeover to the Horizon automation system, which will take Place in Anril. STAFF ACTIVITIES • Eric Lashley attended the meeting of Georgetown Plus on March 6. The organization intends to campaign for the next library bond. • On March 7, Judy Fabry spoke to the Beta Sigma Phi sorority about library services. • Eric attended a meeting of past United Way grantees on March 11. He learned that proposals for equipment, such as the library has made for the past six years, will not be considered in the future. + On March 22, Jo Pendleton, public services librarian, visited the Waco library to observe Horizon in operation and to talk with the staff about problems they had encountered after it was implemented. • Eric spoke at the monthly "Soapbox" event at Sun City on March 26. He talked about library services. VOLUNTEERS + The Friends of the Georgetown Library have begun collecting books for their book We, which will take place May 10-11, in the Lockett Building on the Square.
