In the absence of Judy Parks, Chairman, Zora Evans, Vice -Chairman, convened the meeting at 6:33 PM. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed. Gerald Carson moved and Ema Fielder seconded a motion to approve the minutes. The motion passed unanimously. Director's Report: Eric Lashley reported the following: Monthly statistics were low this due to closures for the ice storm and for the work required to eliminate the mold. Sarah Samson and Cindy Baxter of the library staff went to Waco on February 24th to attend a genealogy workshop Zora Evans has suggested that our library conduct such a workshop and it is being considered The Georgetown City Council passed a resolution this month in favor of the TIF grant being extended. Senator Ogden responded to them indicating that due to budgetary constraints, monies earmarked for TIF will be going to the schools for the next few years. The request for the GISD cooperative grant was submitted on March 3rd Upcoming events at the library include a Tea Party this week for the children as well as an art day that will include face painting. There is a committee being formed to start a citywide book campaign. The committee would select a book and there would then be a campaign which would encourage people in Georgetown to read that book Eric will keep us informed on the progress of the committee. Eric showed the board a master plan for downtown Georgetown that a consultant has developed. The plan shows a location of a future library between Seventh and Eighth streets and between Rock and MLK. The future city hall would be across 8th Street from the proposed library location. Instruction of New Members on Open Meetings Policies Eric Lashley covered the policies relative to open meetings with the new member of the board. Election of Vice Chairman and Secretary Ema Fielder nominated Jerry Sensabaugh for the position of vice-chairman. Judy Griffith seconded the nomination and he was elected unanimously. Gerald Carson nominated Judy Griffith for the position of secretary and Ema Fielder seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous Discussion of Potential Locations for a New Library Zora Evans brought up the possibility of locating a new library at the corner of Austin Avenue and University Boulevard where the Juvenile Center is now situated. There was discussion as to traffic flow and parking. Other locations discussed were the location on the consultant's master plan and the Draeger property. City Budget Schedule Enc reported that the City will begin its budgeting process this month but that a public meeting will probably not be held until April He will keep us informed. Eric also summarized for the board the potential impact of the cuts in the state budget on the library. Georgetown has maintained a good tax base and it is not anticipated that the library will experience budget cuts from that source. In the past budget cuts have been compensated for through the aggressive pursuit of grant money. Agenda Items for Next Meeting: There were no agenda items suggested for next month. There being no further business, Jerry Sensabaugh moved and Ema Fielder seconded a motion to adjourn. The motion passed unanimously and the meeting adjoumed at 6:59 PM. DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY February 2003 HIGHLIGHTS • The library was closed from February 81h through the 151h so that mold remediation could take place. • Since the staff could not be in the building while the moldy drywall was being removed, on Monday, February 10, we gathered in the conference room at the City Recreation Center for another session of personality styles training with Jean Knight. Several staff members are new since Jean met with us last February, so it was helpful for them to learn about others' personality types and vice versa. The afternoon session focused on communication problems among staff members and a number of possible solutions were identified, most of which have been implemented since the training session. • On Tuesday, February 11, the staff split up. In the morning, a few people did computer training in the IR training room, with Sandra Gaiser instructing. The rest of the staff toured the Cedar Park and Round Rock libraries to see what works and doesn't work in these new buildings. In the afternoon a larger group did more advanced computer training with Sandra while the rest of the staff returned to the library to move another twenty -foot section of - books and shelving for the last bit of drywall destruction, then toured the Pflugerville library. • Wednesday morning staff returned to the library. Several men from the Parks department helped move furniture and equipment from the areas that were being relocated. By noon it was possible for the tech services staff to begin setting up their workstations while the rest of the staff helped to move books and supplies to the Texas History Room's new location. We also reopened the book drops and began checking in materials. • By the end of the day on Friday the public computer area had been reconfigured, the Texana collection had been moved to shelves adjacent to the Texas History Room, the career collection had been moved to the former Texana shelves, and the reference collection had been expanded into the former career collection shelves. STAFF ACTIVITIES • Sarah Samson and Sandra Gaiser attended a reference resources teleconference at UT - Austin on February 7. • On February 12, Judy Fabry attended the TLA Legislative Day at the Capitol with Judy Parks. • Sarah and Cindy Baxter traveled to Waco on February 24 to attend a genealogy workshop sponsored by CTLS. • Sarah read at Park Place Assisted Living during the afternoon of February 215c • Eric Lashley attended a Georgetown Project meeting on February 5 and meetings with GISD the afternoon and evening of February 19. I request your consideration be given my application to serve on the Library Advisory Board or on such board or commission as you may deem most appropriate to the needs of our city. I presently live in the Georgetown Extra -Territorial Jurisdiction but have lived in the City limits for five years previously (1994-99). I consider myself to be now as then, a citizen of the Georgetown Community. I believe in the concepts of working within a community that is not bound by geo-political lines on maps and the concept of giving back to the community as you can. This is not a concept new to my family. My mother and father were part of the initial impetus for the creation of Stonehaven. My mother served on the founding Board of Directors for that organization - Both as a writer now and teacher previously, I support the value of a good library program I believe the Georgetown Community is lucky to have the outstanding library program it now has. I ask to be part of that program's continuation and improvement. Thank you for your consideration.
