Eric reported monthly statistics are down for April. Mondays are usually busy but they have been a lot slower than usual. It is expected they will go up again by the end of the month. Eric attended the Central Texas Library System meeting. He learned that the library might have to pay $200 a month for inter -library loans. The state currently subsidizes this. The Friends of the Library Book Sale is this week. The preview for Friends is on Thursday and the Sale on Friday and Saturday. There appears to have been more books donated and collected this year than last The Volunteer appreciation breakfast was held this week and was well attended. Board members in attendance were Ema Fielder, Zora Evans, Judy Parks and Jerry Sensabaugh. All library computers are being upgraded and replaced. The old ones will be sold at the City's surplus auction gale. Donnie Radford, the Library's book processor for the past seven years is retiring. She will be missed. Eric is going to a United Way function on May 17`s. The Boy Scouts are having a volunteer fair at the Courthouse The Town Hall meeting for the Downtown Master Plan will recommend the library stay downtown and have at least 30,000 square feet. The site recommended is at $th and Martin Luther where the Blue Tesco building is now. The Library Computer Classes are completely filled The new Harry Potter book wait list has between 15 and 20 names so far. The plan is to buy 1 book for every 5 holds. Library Budget and Library Hours: Eric said the Library's base budget is up from last year. The Library's $5,000 budget amount for travel and training, which was cut last year, is to be given back. The $9,000 book budget, which was cut 2 years ago, was not given back. That budget itemis used to buy books, which are purchased through a vendor with a 40% discount and free shipping. The budget is a 3% increase over last year. Under new program or service, Eric is requesting to increase 4 part-time employees to full-time in order to increase library hours. This request will be presented on June 23'd to the City Manager. The proposed new schedule would be Saturday 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (2 additional hours on Saturday); Monday through Thursday 10-00 am to 9:00 pm (an additional hour each day except Friday which will remain 10:00 pm to 6:00 pm) and looking toward the future possibly 4 hours on Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm or 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Respectfully submitted, Jackie Cuozzo Board Member DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT • GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY April 2003 HIGHLIGHTS Sandra Gaiser's computer classes have been extremely successful. All sessions of both children's and adult classes were filled. She has begun taking reservations for adult classes in June and July and children's classes beginning May 30. On May 1 the staff will begin creating a wait list for the new Harry Potter book, which is scheduled to be released in late June. Normally, books may not be reserved until they have been received and are in cataloging. If this process goes smoothly, we may offer a "Bestsellers Club" to the patrons, which would allow them to automatically have their names placed on the wait lists for the new books of certain authors. The library's new computers have arrived and are being formatted for use. All computers in the library are being replaced. We hope that the new hardware will make the in-house public catalog run faster. The Friends of the Library are paying for wireless connections for four of the computers that will be used to access the library catalog. STAFF ACTIVITIES • Eric Lashley attended meetings of Helping Hand and the United Way committee on which he serves. On April 22 he and Rosa Garcia attended the regular meeting of the Sun City Kiwanis, where they received a check for $1000 for the summer reading. • Lee Sparks and Sally Bernier attended the annual conference of the Texas Library Association, April 1-3, in Houston. Lee was particularly impressed by a session on changes that libraries are facing. Sally liked the time management session she attended. • Judy Fabry spoke about library services to Judy Parks' PEO group on April 10. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES The staff honored volunteers at a breakfast on April 30.
