DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT
GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
December 2003
HIGHLIGHTS
• Fran Fitaner, who works in Technical Services and orders all of the library's books,
audiobooks, DVDs, videos, music CDs, and office and library supplies, was the Library
Division's employee of the year.
• The redesigned library web page went live in late December.
• Attendance at the children's party with Mr. and Mrs. Claus was very high, probably
approaching 200 people.
• The upgrade to the library's automation system, which took place on December 23,
went very smoothly.
• In spite of the library closing two hours early each evening during the last two weeks of
December, the number of library materials checked out reached new highs for that
time of year. The holiday weeks have usually been a slow time for the library.
STAFF ACTIVITIES
• The new cataloging librarian, Kate DiPronio, completed cataloging the backlog of
children's books that had built up over the past year. Now when she finishes her work
with children's books, she is available to help catalog adult materials. She is also
working a regular shift at the circulation desk.
• For Christmas, the staff adopted a family associated with the McKinney-Vento Project.
Zelinda Richards, project administrator, spoke to the staff on the day that they
presented their gift to the family.
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
• Richard Miller, who volunteered to teach basic computer classes at the library, ,spent
December designing his course. For his presentations he will use a media projector
that was purchased with funds from the Dell Connected Community grant. He will
teach two classes each Monday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a
maximum of twelve students in each session. The classes will be repeated each month
throughout the year.
• The help of Gilbert Bowers, Georgia Copeland, Colin and Judy Johnston, and
Thomas and Katy Moore, all of whom worked their regular hours or more during
December, was especially valuable during December. Vacations and illness among
staff and volunteers, and especially heavy use of the library during the holiday period,
put heavy burdens on everyone who worked.
