new library. He is also working on a design for the coffee shop included in
the library.

DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT
• GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
October 2004
HIGHLIGHTS
• Robert Barber and Tim Brown accepted full-time positions on the public services staff
and began working on October 18 and 25 respectively. Both have learned to use
Horizon, the library's automation software, very quickly and they both work well with the
public.
• Kate Di Pronio applied for and received a Texas Reads Grant in the amount of $2662,
which she will use for a young adult summer reading program in 2005. Forty-one
libraries applied for the grants but only six were approved.
• Moving the laptop computers to the circulation desk area has worked well. The check-
out and check -in process is more orderly since the desk is always attended. The
demand for laptops after 4:00 p.m. remains very high, with a wait list forming every
day.
• The winning book in the Georgetown Reads! voting was The Tortilla Curtain by T.C.
Boyle. The library has ordered 25 additional copies of the book and they should be
available for check-out by November 9.
STAFF ACTIVITIES
• During the month, Eric Lashley spoke about the library bond proposition at three City -
sponsored open house events, to the Sun City Kiwanis Club, to the PEO Club, to the
Sertoma Club, and to the Historic & Architectural Review Commission.
• On October 19, Eric attended an orientation meeting for Library Legislative Day, which
will take place in February. He will be the coordinator for our legislative district.
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
• Students from Southwestern University's Latinos Unidos organization helped make
the children's Halloween party a huge success. The party was held on Friday, October
29, from 5 -8 p.m. The students were in charge of games for the very large crowd. The
event was held in the Children's Room.
