DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT
S GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
February 2004
HIGHLIGHTS
• The Friends of the Library purchased a second colorful rug for the Children's Room.
• The Foundation's Color Your Library tile -painting fundraiser, held on Monday,
February 16 when school was not in session, went very well. Kids painted more than
100 tiles that day.
• Eric Lashley met several times during February with Chuck Croslin, the architect the
City has hired to create building plans for the facilities that have been proposed for a
bond election.
• On February 2"d use of the public computers reached a new high--201 people in one
day.
• All staff members attended training in how to use the new Voice Over Internet Protocol
phone system that will be activated early in March.
STAFF ACTIVITIES
• Gretchen Pruett, and Judy Parks, the library's lay representative, attended the CTLS
membership meeting that was held in Temple on February 27.
• Sarah Samson, Ethel Barnes, and Ash Garcia attended a workshop in Austin about
using the TexShare and Amigos databases.
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
• Judy Johnston, volunteer coordinator for the Friends, worked nearly 40 hours during
February. (An average volunteer works about 8 hours per month.) Many new people
have indicated an interest in becoming volunteers and the training process takes a lot
of Judy's time. The library is very fortunate to have someone who is willing to give this
much time to us.

Attn: Sandra Lee,
I am 80 years old, (DOB) 2/10/23. I am a Masters swimmer
and I train regularly; over a mile daily. In 1998 1 entered
in three swimming competitions and won eleven medals including
a medal in NIKE World Games. I was one of the top ten best
swimmers in the United States, in three events.
For over 30 years I have been a self employed ceramic tile
contractor Specializing in rebuilding stall showers, building
custom tiled whirl -pool bath tubs and I also contracted tile
work for a few select home builders.
I have four successful adult children of which I am very
proud. I was married for a period of forty four years to a
remarkable lady, who unfortunately, became a long term invalid.
As her health deteriorated (rheumatoid Arthritis), I was required
to spend more time caring of her and less time working. I had
to hire people to assist her at home. The medical, hospital
and doctor bills were horrendous. Eventually I was forced to
retire so that I could take care of her full time. She passed
away in August of 1997.
Due to the above reasons I have not been able to adequately
fund my retirement. MY financial situation is stabilized with
the aid of subsidized housing. I have excellent health and
I can out perform many people, years younger than myself.
On a personal level, I am a voracious reader. I am well
acquainted with the Georgetown library. Classical music is
central to my being. The romantic period of music is where
I dwell. The towering symphonies of Beethoven, the soul stirring
Second Piano Concerto of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky's melodious
Nutcracker, Borodin's Polovstian dances From his Prince Igor,
to soar with Ralph Voughn Williams ascending Lark: These and
hundreds of other selections, make my life brimming with joy,
and offer me fulfillment.
I am adept at public speaking. I have given a lecture on
the problems endured by the long term care giver. I have done
readings such as Rudyard Kipling's Gunga Din and Tennysonts
Charge of the light brigade. I have given talks on George
Gershwin.
I don't know how many years I have left. While I am able
to, I would like to give some of my remaining time in service
to others.
Very truly yours,
Zygmund Kasner
