Registrations of residents increased by 30% and of non-residents by 44%. • The death of Dixie Hanna, who had been a library employee for more than twenty years and who had been the main selector of library materials for adults during most of those years, was not a highlight, but it certainly had a significant impact on the staff. The collections she built will be a lasting legacy to the library and the vast experience she brought to her position will be difficult to replace. In the future, selection of adult materials will be divided among the professional librarians on the staff. • The Georgetown Public Library is a finalist for the Texas Downtown Association's award for Best Downtown Improvement during 2006-07. The winner will be announced at the association's annual conference in mid -October. STAFF • On September 19, Eric Lashley participated in a planning meeting for a workshop that will be held early in 2008 to help libraries plan new buildings. Architects and librarians with construction experience are working together to set up this workshop. • Bethni King, the library's young adult librarian, attended a CTLS workshop that was held at the Georgetown Library on September 20. It focused on ways to present science and math concepts to preschool and elementary -age children. • Judy Johnston and Eric Lashley attended the CTLS quarterly membership meeting in Caldwell on September 28. VOLUNTEERS The staff is extremely grateful for the countless hours Judy Johnston spent working with them over the past four years. As of October 1, Judy's responsibilities as coordinator of the library's volunteer program will be assumed by a staff member, because the job has become too involved to expect a volunteer to handle. Judy had trained and scheduled all of the library's adult volunteers since October 2003. During that time, total adult volunteer hours increased from 4700 per year to 5700, which allowed staff to rely on volunteers to do most of the checking in and shelving of materials.
