Moore, Linda Nix ABSENT: Marc Parrish, Stephanie Sorensen STAFF: Eric Lashley OTHERS IN ATTENDANCE: Judy Johnston, CI'LS Lay Representative MINUTES: The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chair Linda Nix. Ruth Anne Mallory moved and Allison Dolan -Hannah seconded that the minutes for the November meeting be accepted. The motion passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: • Circulation and patron visits are up from a year ago • 10,000 library cards have been distributed since last January • A fire drill was held recently and will be done regularly from now on When the alarm sounds, the doors to the upstairs wings shut automatically. People who are using the meeting rooms must take responsibility to evacuate the people m those rooms. Communication among the staff will be through walkie-talkies. If a handicapped person is on the second floor, a staff member must wait with them in a fire exit stairwell for firefighter rescue. • The police department used the library one night last week to hold a drill regarding hostage taking and security • Eric Lashley is to be on the Task Force for Transforming Texas Libraries, which advocates easy service for all patrons, such as immediately issuing library cards with a paperless application; going to a non-residential fee structure with only one kind of card; using the web more; and having greeters at the front of the library to direct patrons • Computer classes have resumed • The Friends of the Library gave $15,000 for library needs • In March the Library will be featured by C 1 LS and AIA in a symposium in. Austin on library architecture. Photographers were here last week from Texas Architecture magazine • Leslie Bradley is doing the project of digitalizing the Heritage Society photos. They will be put in folder form and will be available online Board Member of the Month: The Board member of the month was Ruth Lawrence. She was introduced by Linda Nix. Book Mobile: Gretchen Pruett and Rosa Garcia are working with Gwen Davis of GISD on the bookmobile project. It is possible that the bookmobile may be ready by summer. Book Fair: Allison Dolan -Hannah reported progress on creating a book festival, possibly for the fall or spring of 2009. It will be for adults and children. There will be a committee meeting in January. Frank Campbell, a Barnes & Noble advisor, will be involved. Technology Advisory Committee: Eric Lashley reported that he is forming a Technology Advisory Committee, and he wants someone from the Library Advisory Board to sit on this committee. The committee will consider (1) replacing the ILS (Horizon automation system), which may cost $120,000; (2) public access computers and technology; (3) training computers; (4) website redesign; (5) meeting room technology; and (6) accountability, that is, determining who is in charge of what. Other committee members will include IT department staff and representatives of the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation. Ruth Anne Mallory and Linda Nix volunteered to be the Library Advisory Board's members. The first meeting is to be in January. A motion to adjourn was made by Ruth Anne Mallory. Moore, Acting Secretary Linda Nix, hair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY November 2007 HIGHLIGHTS • The library had its first fire drill on November 8. All concerned were pleased with the orderly evacuation that took place, but it was also an opportunity to identify problems needing resolution. One issue, communication among staff members who are responsible for the evacuation, was resolved by purchasing walkie talkies, which are now kept at the circulation and reference desks. • The third event in the Friends of the Library's Hill Country Authors series took place on November 9. Two hundred people bought tickets to hear Susan Wittig Albert speak. • Reference Librarian Suzette Davidson arranged for volunteer Jim Minson to teach two two - session classes during November, one in basic genealogy and the other in using the Internet for genealogical research. The classes were full. • Richard Groves, Adult Services Librarian, arranged for volunteer Dan Tannenbaum to teach Computer Basics I and II during November. • For Children's Book Week, Mr. Johnny & Sharon entertained the storytime set on November 15.On November 14 the children took a field trip to Windsong Farm where they spent several hours watching rodeo -type activities. • Richard Groves inaugurated his Movie'Ciub, which meets twice monthly. He had a good turnout on November 15 for the showing of "Pieces of April." • The Friends of the Library Board agreed to fund all of the "immediate needs" and three of the "needs that may be delayed" from the budget that Eric Lashley presented at the Library Board's November meeting. STAFF ♦e L� On November 27, Eric Lashley attended another meeting for the workshop about planning and constructing new libraries that will be held in Austin early in 2008. Architects and librarians with construction experience are working together to set up this workshop. Kathleen Bowling, the staff member who has taken over coordinating the volunteer program, met with the volunteers on November 13 to introduce herself and the goals she has for the program.
