The library is not able to count the visits, as there is no door count system in place yet. Tony Sansevero has not fmished the mural art in the children's room. The Texas History Room is still not finished, but Eric Lashley is hopeful that it will be done by the end of the week. The tax help offered four days per week is going well. The English as Second Language (ESL) is well received. The only issue concerning Eric Lashley and the staff is related to the unsupervised children from participating students. Employee Activities: Gretchen Pruett returned as assistant director. Bethni King, children's librarian, and David Sharp library assistant, joined the staff. There are two more open positions (public services librarian and reference librarian), which hopefully will be filled by mid -May or June. In addition to the evening cleaning crew, daytime custodian Georgina is now working at the hbrary. Upcoming events: The annual Children's Tea Party will be held during spring break. The library will be part of the Georgetown Red Poppy Festival this year. INTRODUCTION OF LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER - BILLY CRYER Austinite Billy Cryer came to the library from Georgetown's Municipal Court. His duties include all basic public services. He is also an important asset as he speaks Spanish. Asked why he wanted to work at the library, he answered that the library feels like a haven for him. ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR AND SECRETARY Patti Jennings Moore nominated Stephanie S. Sorenson to serve as the new vice -chair. The vote was unanimous in favor of her election Anja Lippincott volunteered to serve a second term as secretary of the Board The vote was unanimous in favor of her election. REPORT ON GEORGETOWN READS! Around 100 people attended the program with Jack Pardee. A smaller group of interested people attended the third event, a panel discussion about the importance of football in a community, with Coach Blue, City Manager Paul Brandenburg and Southwestern professor Dr. Dan Hilliard Eric Lashley asked Board members to join the Georgetown Reads! committee. Patti Jennings Moore and Stephanie S. Sorensen showed interest. Judy Johnston suggested asking bookstore owners to serve on the committee. REPORT ON CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Linda Walke reported to Eric Lashley that the Capital Campaign has received $220 000 m cash. There have been two major donations during the last couple of weeks — a check for $5,000 from Georgetown Healthcare Auxiliary and a check for $10,000 for the fountain. Rich Vosberg's term as president of the Library Foundation ended, it is expected that Larry Franks will be the new president. Linda Nix adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Anja Lippincott, Secretary 1 Linda Nix, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY February 2007 HIGHLIGHTS * Two events related to the 2007 Georgetown Reads! program took place during February. On the 61h, Carlton Stowers, the author of Where Dreams Die Hard, spoke about writing his book to an enthusiastic and engaged audience of about 85.On the 201h, Jack Pardee found many parallels between his experiences on a six -man football team and Stowers' team from Penelope, Texas. The audience of about 100 asked questions for nearly an hour after Pardee concluded his prepared remarks. • Second -Hand Prose, the Friends' used bookstore, has been very successful. The number of donations coming in is sometimes more than the volunteers can handle. • The library is cooperating with the Williamson County Literacy Council by providing free meeting space for ESL classes each Tuesday and Thursday evening. This is a program that has been on the library's long-range plan for many years but was not possible in the old building. • The library also is providing free space for volunteers who prepare income tax returns for individuals. The volunteers are from AARP and also from VITA (Volunteers for Income Tax Assistance, who are IRS -trained). Tax assistance is available Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Wednesday afternoons, and for four hours on Saturdays. • Booking of the library's large meeting rooms has been brisk, with most users being paying customers. (City agencies may use the rooms for free.) People also have discovered the free conference room, which holds 10-12 people, and it is also heavily booked. • Finish work on the building continued throughout the month and another walk-through took place on March 1. The artist painting the murals in the children's room also is still at work. The public enjoys watching him and asking him questions when he works during open hours. STAFF • During February David Sharp joined the staff as a library assistant in the public services area. He is still being trained to work at the circulation desk and the reference desk. VOLUNTEERS Volunteers continue to carry most of the burden of checking in materials and shelving. Adult volunteer hours came within a few hours of setting a new monthly record and total volunteer hours did set a new record. 0 GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY DONATIONS -- February 2007 San Gabriel Woman's Club of Georgetown San Gabriel Woman's Club of Georgetown Friends of the Georgetown Library Darlene & Emory Followell Pedernales Electric Company Connie A.
