Moore, Linda Nix, Stephanie S. Sorensen, Marc Parrish and Ruth Lawrence ABSENT: None STAFF IN ATTENDANCE Eric Lashley OTHERS IN ATTENDANCE* Judy Johnston (CTLS Lay Representative) and Helen MacAskill (Friends of the Library) MINUTES The meeting was called to order by Linda Nix at 6 30 p.m. Allison Dolan -Hanna moved that the minutes for May be accepted and the motion was seconded by Stephanie Sorensen. The motion was passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Eric Lashley advised the Board members of upcoming events at the library. He also provided the following information. ® The Director discussed the new library budget including the City's action on providing $200 000 for a study of additional parking, positions for two more people and funding for library materials. ® Director Lashley distributed two brochures related to programs scheduled at the library. #1 "Sail Away with Books", Georgetown Public Library Children's Summer Reading program for the months of June and July 2007. #2 "Around the World in 80 Days", Teen Summer Reading Program. The Director also passed out the following documents: #3 "Rules and Policies for Meeting Room Use" till "Georgetown Public Library Meeting Room Facilities" • Director Lashley opened a discussion about the meeting/classroom areas and gave the members information related to the types of groups that are renting the public rooms and problems that he and his staff are experiencing. The discussion included room rates. He also advised the Board that the library will start accepting credit charges for rental fees, fines and losses. • He said that beginning next week, the Palace Theater will be renting the classroom that the Advisory Board uses for kids' programs. • The director said that circulation was up approximately 7000 over May 2006. • Volunteer hours are up • Donations of books are up • The entry counter at the library door had been repositioned and is functioning properly. President of the Library Advisory Board Linda Nix initiated a "board member introduction period" by giving attendees a brief description of her career, family, interests and hobbies. She will ask one member each month to provide similar information about themselves. INTRODUCTION OF HELEN MACASKILL OF THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: Ms. MacAskill gave a very extensive and informative presentation on the functions of the Friends, including their fund raising activities, distributions and membership. She explained in detail the cooperative endeavors of the library director and the Friends. She passed out to the attendees a "Friends of the Library Mission Statement" and a message from the Friends of the Library president. Member P.J. Moore moved that the June meeting be adjourned. Ruth Anne Mallory seconded the motion. The motion was carried unanimously at 7:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marc Parrish, Secretary Y7yLinda Nix, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY May 2007 HIGHLIGHTS • On May 17, the Williamson County Art Guild opened a display at the library of their members' work. The paintings were hung in the bridge area on the second floor and will remain in place for a month. During May the library received donations from the Visual Arts Club of Sun City and the Pastel Society of Central Texas to help pay for the new art hanging system. • Contractors continued to work on replacing the panels on the circulation desk, on reconfiguring the HVAC system in the meeting rooms and the staff area, and removing the bubbles from the linoleum flooring in the children's room and the area adjacent to the coffee shop. • The evening of May 16, Kris Liem, Emmy award -winning film editor, spoke about her work. Forty people attended the program, which was held in the Friends Room and was arranged by Eric Lashley. Kris is the daughter of Janet Liem, a past president of the Friends of the Library. STAFF • On May 9, Bethni King traveled to Austin to attend a CTLS-sponsored workshop about gaming in the library. She plans to use a gift of $500 from the Tippit Middle School Junior National Honor Society to purchase electronic gaming equipment for the library. • May 8 —10 Gretchen Pruett and Kathleen Bowling attended three days of supervisor training that was sponsored by the Texas Municipal League. • On May 23 Eric Lashley and Billy Cryer attended a CTLS-sponsored website workshop in Temple.
