David Ciambrone, Ruth Anne Mallory, Glenn Mautner, Shana Nichols, Linda Nix, Marisue Miller and Gerald Sensabaugh STAFF IN ATTENDENCE. Eric Lashley, Library Director; Hannah Moore, Library Assistant OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE. Judy Johnston (CTLS Lay Representative) MINUTES: The meeting was called to order by Chair Linda Nix at 6:32 PM. Because there were no comments concerning the May minutes, the minutes were approved as distnbuted. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation was down for the month of May due to the delay in the Summer Reading kick-off which is normally scheduled in May, but was moved to June 1. He also pointed out that the library is now tracking meeting room usage. Eric reported that the Texas Society of Sculptors was currently having an exhibit through June 29. A reception will be held Sunday, June 7, 2008 and a sculpture demonstration will be held Saturday, June 21 at 1:00 PM. The library is fully staffed for the first time since the new library was open in January 2007. Eric reported that the letter Linda Nix wrote to the City Manager concerning the library's budget requests helped secure some budget increases in the City Manager's proposed budget for next fiscal year. Eric has received many calls from patrons wanting to help with the tool library by donating tools and volunteering to help with the project. He reported that he received a call from Almighty Rentals about assisting with the project. The summer reading program kicked -off on June 1. The library is attempting to have all of the children register and monitor their reading on-line this year. It was announced that Stephen Saylor will be speaking at the library on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:00 PM to discuss his book, "A Twist At The End", which was this year's Georgetown Reads! selection. With the help of the Friends of the Library, library staff have met and gained cooperation with the staff of GISD to obtain the Accelerated Reader lists from the schools. It was determined that the library had the majority of the titles on the list and Rosa Garcia has ordered the titles that we were lacking. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: • Shana Nichols introduced herself to the board. Shana told the board that her name rhymes with banana and that she was often called "Shana Banana". Shana grew up in a small town in Texas. She moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. She worked 14 years for the City of Austin and now works for Computer Science Corporation in Austin. She has lived 10 years in Georgetown. She became interested in joining the library board because she is a big reader and she wanted to get more involved with her community. • Hannah Moore was introduced to the board. Hannah is a native of Georgetown. She became a patron of the library as a small child. She volunteered at the library as a teenager. She worked briefly as a temp/on call before being hired full time as a library assistant in December 2007. Her responsibilities include working at the circulation desk, organizing the donated magazines, and assisting with the donated books. • Eric reported that the library is moving forward with moving from the current Horizon automated system to Biblionix. The library will be hiring a firm, Alpha-G, to help with the migration of information from one system to the other. • Eric reported that the bookmobile is on hold until the paperwork required by the school system is signed by the Superintendent. The library is ready to assist whenever the final decision is made by the Superintendent of GISD. • David Ciambrone announced the library staff and a committee from the San Gabriel Writer's League have met and the first class will be offered September 8. A publicity campaign will begin shortly to advertise the classes and we will make every attempt to get coverage in the Williamson County Sun. It was decided that the board would not meet in July, but would meet in August. Chairperson Linda Nix adjourned the meeting at 7:24 PM. Respectfully submitted, kin Shana Nichols, Secretary /) ,pt y Linda Nix, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY May 2008 HIGHLIGHTS The committee working on the oral history of Georgetown's black school met again on May 6 and began planning a panel discussion, involving five or six people who either attended the black school or were instrumental in bringing about integration. A moderator will pose questions to the panel and the public also will be invited to participate. The purpose of the panel event, which is tentatively scheduled for a Saturday afternoon in the latter part of August, is to generate interest in the project and to identify persons who are willing to be interviewed individually. Amanda Eyre Ward spoke at the library on May 6th as part of the Friends of the Library's Hill Country Authors Series. Approximately 80 persons attended the event. On May 13, City Council approved the Arts and Culture Board's selection of a sculpture, Waferin'the Work Mules, by Austin sculptor Bob Coffee, which will be installed on the southeast corner of the Courthouse Square before the end of November. Two new staff members began work on May 19, Laura Evans, who is doing cataloging, and Haley Denton, who is working 20 hours per week at the circulation desk and in the children's room. • On May 6, Eric Lashley, Gretchen Pruett, and Sally Bernier visited Westbank Library to learn about the staffs use and opinions of the Biblionix Apollo automation system. They investigated administrative, public service, and cataloging aspects of the software. This is the system being considered for our library and Westbank has been using it for five years. On May 28, Xan Charbonnet, creator and vendor of the Apollo software, met with the professional staff of the Georgetown Public Library to discuss his product. VOLUNTEERS A number of persons have expressed interest in doing what they can to support the tool - lending library. Some have offered tools and others have said they would be willing to be part of the borrowing and returning processes. One man even suggested expanding the idea to include lending medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs. 9 • Patron Comments, May 2008 Comment: Is there no baby diaper changing stations in the library? If so, where is it hidden? Response: Each restroom has a baby diaper changing station located in the handicapped stall of each restroom. The exception is the restroom in the children's room. The baby changing station is located on the wall next to the sink. Comment: Please! Please! More handicap parking. Response: We will look into getting more handicapped parking spaces. We have the number of spaces required by the City's building codes. The issue is more complicated than designating spaces as being handicap only. We have been asked to convert the parking spaces next to the current handicapped spaces but those spaces do not meet code for handicap spaces due to the slope of the parking lot. The grade of the parking lot is too steep to be considered handicapped parking. Comment: You have all the books I want and need! Comment: Awesome Dinosaur books. I wish I could live in this library! 0 Comment: It would be great if y'all had Planet Earth movies for school. Comment: Instead of spending money on fancy glasswork at the entrance, maybe you should have thought about adequate parking for your patrons. Comment: I would like to have a class that teaches Spanish to English speaking patrons. Comment: Too noisy when reading upstairs — noise from main lobby very distracting — Recommend Plexiglas go all the way to the ceiling to help soundproof area. Parking awful today. is GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY Comparative Fiscal Year Statistics 2007 2008 Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Annual Total Patron Visits Current Year 18694 24295 26951 25342 24229 25231 190326 2006-2007 2271 19035 14916 N/A** N/A** N/A** 1288 21999 202304 2005-2006 2332 17724 17784 21945 21506 23213 22228 23394 265219 2004-2005 21815 20831 10203* 21827 22611 26176 22693 355 239469 Circulation 2007 2008 Current Year 31074 31938 30642 35279 34536 35492 33663 3385 266459 2006-2007 28923 25337 24141 17259 32507 36302 31555 35627 386948 2005-2006 28242 26160 22436 28259 27898 31229 26559 28796 348114 2004-2005 26895 25032 23204 29526 27764 31192 28531 28257 350716 FY 2007-2008 Statistics Children's Programs Annual Total Attendance 705 704 720 655 981 1159 630 989 6543 Programs 3 2 1 2 6 1 3 18 Story Time 13 12 14 21 22 20 26 19 147 Other (Tour, Movies, Crafts) 0 4 3 3 4 3 5 11 33 After School Programs 3 4 0 1 5 3 4 0 17 Either Services ILL Ordered 28 31 25 25 17 18 32 34 210 ILL filled 16 28 26 23 17 18 23 26 177 Lg Print Circuit 200 200 200 200 200 200 200 200 1600 Internet usage (persons) 6501 6331 6166 7244 7345 5905 7069 n/a 46561 Reference Transactions We n/a n/a n1a n/a n/a n/a n/a 0 Volunteer Hours Adult 391.00 797,75 571:50 567.65 610.75 625.75 752.50 55235 4869.65 Teen 5100 35.00 25:00 96.00 37.00 41.00 43.00 38.00 368.00 Community Service 33.00 72.25 68:00 133.50 140,50 132.50 328.50 214Y5 1123.00 Total 477;00 905.00 664;50 797.15 788.25 799.5 1124.00 805;50 6360;65 Registrations City Residents -new 162 86 187 150 163 156 118 129 1151 GISD Kids' Cards 6 9 12 4 13 7 5 3 59 Non -residents -new 39 32 67 42 38 40 40 25 323 Total 207 127 266 196 214 203 163 157 1533 Cash Receipts Fines/Misc.
