CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: ■ Introduction of Board Member: David Ciambrone introduced himself to the board. David moved to Georgetown from California. He has a daughter and grandchildren who live in Austin. He had a very diverse occupational life working as a police officer, defense contractor, college professor, chemical engineer, and member of the Resolution Trust Corporation. He is an author of mysteries and nonfiction. He currently serves as the President of the San Gabriel Writer's League and will be the President of the Writer's League of Texas. He joined the Library Advisory Board to serve the Library and help created a partnership between the Library and local authors. A product of this is the new Writer's College program. ■ Update on Writer's College: David reported that the first classes have been very successful. The College has already given over $550.00 to the Library. David also reported that the San Gabriel Writer's League has given a grant to the Library for children's and teen materials of approximately $2,100.00. ® Update on migration to Apollo automation system — Eric reported that the new Apollo system went live on October 1. The staff has been working through a number of bugs concerning the reserves and the family cards, but overall we are able to function well and the system should continue to improve. Eric stated that he had better response from Xan Charbonnet, owner of Biblionix, than he received in years with the previous vendor, Horizon. Ruth Anne noted she likes a number of the features in the new catalog ▪ Update on Long -Range Plan — Linda asked for volunteers to sit on a sub -committee to work on a new draft for a Long -Range Plan. After a brief discussion, the board decided not to change the meeting day or time. Chairperson Linda Nix adjourned the meeting at 7:10 PM. Respectfully bmitted, ana Nichols; Secre` ary It da Nix, Chair El • • Patron Comments Comment: The Library should open at noon on Sunday. You had 10 people waiting for the doors to open at 1:00. Comment: The dispenser outside the women's restroom has been empty for several weeks. Comment: My 5 year old daughter and I would like to learn Spanish. It would be great if you offered a class! Or some tapes to learn from. Comment: Please open a little earlier on Sundays! Comment: It would be great if the library could offer a class in beginning conversational Spanish for English speakers. I know quite a few people who would sign. Billy could teach it. Comment: Can you please get an upgrade of Flash 9. Please! Comment: Get a Life! Comment: Love the improvements. And the self -serve for "Books on Hold." Great way to relieve the smart work force from mundane chores. Great idea. Love our Librarians!!!! My question is —how do I change our ZIP CODE from 78628 to 78633. Comment: What happened to Library Elf? DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT . GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY September 2008 HIGHLIGHTS • Gretchen Pruett, the library's assistant director, resigned effective September 26 to become the director of the New Braunfels Public Library. • The library was closed September 29 through October 3 as Apollo, the new automation system, was installed and staff and volunteers were trained to use it. Also during this time the music CD collection was moved to the second floor, the reference area was rearranged, shelves were added near the first floor circulation desk to accommodate the new self-service system of picking up books on hold, and additional self -checkout stations were created. • Kendall Young's silent auction of his artwork, which continued through September, brought in another $80. • The entire staff participated in a workshop with trainer Jean Knight, learning to identify individual personality styles and ways of working effectively with each of the different styles. This training is something the library staff has gone through three times in the past 10-12 years, as new people were hired and the mix of personality styles changed. STAFF • Robert Barber, Bethni King, and Gloria Powers attended a City -sponsored time • management workshop on September 16. • Kathleen Burnop attended a CTLS-sponsored storytelling workshop in Cedar Park on September 17. • Robert Barber and Therese Fernandes traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to attend a conference for library paraprofessionals on September 24 and 25. The Friends of the Library paid the expenses for their trips. • Eric Lashley and Judy Johnston, the library's lay representative, attended the quarterly membership meeting of CTLS that was held in Taylor on September 26. The help of volunteers to check -in and shelve books after the new automation system was up and running was invaluable. Staff and volunteers worked for three days to handle the backlog of books that accumulated while the system was down. You are correct, toxday'slibrary isnot asquiet aslibraries inthe past. Our building was actually designed with this in mind. The first floor has was designed 0oallow more noise than the traditional library. We located the ohi\dnan'o'voomand coffee shop onthe first floor. The second floor ismuch more quiet and vvo have small study rooms that are available for free as well as quiet space in our Texas History Room. Just because the first floor is noisier than a traditional library, doesn't mean a patron's noise levelcan interfere with another patron's use ufthe library. Our policies deal specifically with noise urdisruptive behavior. If other patrons are disruptive, please let a staff member know and they will be glad to speak with the person causing the disruption, Please beaware that vvoare apublic facility that deals with patrons ofall ages and patrons with different needs. |tisn't uncommon for the staff k>deal with patrons that have hearing loss and to communicate with these patrons, the staff members may need to speak loudly. We also have a number of children that use the library and it may be common to hear babies crying from time to time. Please also be aware that noise does not affect everyone the same. I take your concerns seriously and would welcome an opportunity to discuss them with you further the next time you visit the library. Please feel free toknock onmydoor atanytime.
