HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_04.14.2008Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board Of Georgetown, Texas April 14, 2008 MEMBERS IN ATTENDENCE• David Ciambrone, Ruth Anne Mallory, Glenn Mautner, Marisue Miller, Shana Nichols, Linda Nix, and Gerald Sensabaugh ABSENT: None STAFF IN ATTENDENCE• Eric Lashley, Library Director; Kathleen Bowling, Volunteer Coordinator and Supervisor OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE• Judy Johnston (CTLS Lay Representative) MINUTES• The meeting was called to order by Chair Linda Nix at 6:30 PM. Because there were no comments concerning the March minutes, they were approved as distributed. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation was slightly down for the month of March. Computer use was lower due to the network being downfor a day and a half. The teen space has been painted and is being decorated. Rugs and booth seating have been purchased The children's department was very busy during Spring Break. Eric reported that he had done presentations for the Sun City Computer Club and the Sun City Kiwanis. Bethni King and Gretchen Pruett attended the Public Library Association meeting in Minneapolis, MN The Board asked for them to make a report to them about the conference. Director Lashley and other staff members will be attending the annual meeting of the Texas Library Association in Dallas, April 15-18. Tax preparation volunteers will continue to assist patrons throughout the month. They are continuing to volunteer after April 15tn to help those that need to file for the stimulus payment. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: Linda Nix introduced herself to the board She talked about her education and career as a teacher. She became interested in volunteering at the library after volunteering with Helping Hand Tutoring. Linda joined the Library Advisory Board in 2005 and was appointed chair of the board in 2007. ▪ Kathleen Bowling was introduced to the board. Kathleen has worked with the library for almost 12 years. Kathleen is responsible for the supervision of the library in the evenings and each Saturday. She is the volunteer coordinator, works with Helping Hand Tutoring, orders the federal income tax forms, and serves on the staff's social committee. • Director Lashley made a presentation to the board regarding the City's budget process. At the end of April, the City Manager will decide the base budget of each department. Eric listed the following budget request increases for next fiscal year: 1. $500 for Travel and Training 2. $25,000 for Library Materials 3. $42,000 for public access computers 4. $8,000 for Library Supplies 5. $1,700 for Office Supplies 6. $15,000 for Salary Adjustments/Promotions Ruth Anne Mallory moved to have Linda Nix draft a letter to the City Manager and City Council in support of the Library's budget requests. The motion was seconded by David Ciambrone and the motion passed unanimously. ® The library is continuing plans for a joint bookmobile with the Georgetown Independent School District. • David Ciambrone made a presentation to the board concerning ways in which the library and local authors could improve relations. David distributed a handout with ideas of ways in which the library and the San Gabriel Writer's League could foiul a partnership. (Handout made a part of these minutes.) After discussion among the board Eric and David decided to meet in the near future to discuss options and meet with the membership of the San Gabriel Writer's League. Director Lashley gave a demonstration of the Library's new web site. The web site is still a work in progress and board members were encouraged to critique the site Shana Nichols asked that the board receive monthly comments from patrons Eric said that he could incorporate patron comments in his i ionthly director's report. Linda Nix, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY March 2008 HIGHLIGHTS STAFF Spring break activities in the children's room brought in lots of people. An author/artist provided drawing lessons, homeschooled musicians put on an Irish music concert, and Enzo, the new science whiz kid did his fossils show. Staff members said the annual tea party was "the best yet." The teen area transformation is still taking place. The walls have been painted and area rugs installed. New booths, which have been ordered, will complete the redo. The Arts and Culture Board's seven -member public art panel, which is composed of three Board members and four citizens, is considering the twenty-four proposals that arrived in response to the RFQ for a piece of art for the Courthouse Square. On April 17 Eric Lashley spoke to the Sun City Computer Club, Bethni King and Gretchen Pruett attended the annual conference of the Public Library Association, which was held in Minneapolis March 25-29. On March 31 and April 1, Richard Groves, representing the City of Georgetown, attended a two-day conference of safety professionals that was held in Houston. VOLUNTEERS • Local musician Taylor Weaver provided musical ambiance throughout the tea party by playing the piano, singing, and accompanying other musicians. A number of mothers and older girls assisted with tea party decorations, serving, and cleanup. • Bernie Baumbach, our volunteer who is indexing the City Council minutes from the 1 gth and early 20th centuries presented his work to a group of sixty people in a study group at Faith Lutheran Church.
