HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_09.11.2008Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board Of Georgetown, Texas September 11, 2008, 6:00 PM MEMBERS IN ATTENDENCE: Ruth Anne Mallory, Marisue Miller, Shana Nichols, and Linda Nix ABSENT: David Ciambrone, Glenn Mautner, and Gerald Sensabaugh STAFF IN ATTENDENCE: Eric Lashley — Library Director, Rosa Garcia — Children's Services Coordinator OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE. Judy Johnston (CTLS Lay Representative) MINUTES. The meeting was called to order by Linda Nix — Chair at 6:10 PM. Because there were no comments concerning the August minutes, they were approved as distributed. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation was up for the month of August, but attendance was slightly down. Eric reported that the Library had infoiined the Covenant Life Church that they would not be allowed to use the Library s meeting rooms after December 2008 due to violations of the meeting room policies. The August 16th program entitled Personal Reflections on Desegregation in Georgetown was attended by approximately 100 patrons. The program was recorded and will be shown on local access Channel 10. Eric reported that Gretchen Pruett, Assistant Library Director has resigned to take the Library Director position in New Braunfels, TX. Gretchen's last day will be September 26, 2008. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING• Introduction of Staff Member: Rosa Garcia, Children's Services Coordinator introduced herself to the board. Rosa grew up in Puerto Rico. Her husband was in the military and she lived all over the world. Rosa and her family moved to Georgetown 16 years ago when her husband was assigned to Fort Hood. The first week Rosa was in Georgetown she walked by the City offices and noticed their was a posting for a Children's Librarian. Rosa applied, was hired and started what she thought would be a short-term job. She said she has seen a number of changes in her last 16 years but, still enjoys coming to work. She is a grandmother of three and is looking forward to retirement to spend more time with her grandchildren. Report on Children's Summer Reading Program. Rosa reported that she had a very successful Summer Reading Program. Rosa passed around photos of some of the events. ® Report on the Hill Country Book Festival: Rosa passed out a poster for the Hill Country Book Festival that will be held here at the Library October 11, 2008. She is excited about the upcoming festival but doesn't know how well it may be attended. The committee hopes to make this an annual event. • Update on migration to Apollo automation system. Eric reported that the migration of data has been successful and that the staff has been training on how to use the new system. Volunteers will have the opportunity to be trained the week of September 29-October 3, when the library is closed. • Update on Writers' College: Since David was unable to attend the board meeting, Eric reported that the first class of the Writers' College was attended by approximately 55 students. Eric reported that most of the classes have students signed up and the Williamson County Sun did a great job of publicizing the college. ® Update on tool -lending library: Eric reported that he had spoken with Robbie Wyler Historic District Planner, and it was determined that any tool shed located behind the Library would not need approval by the City's Histonc Architecture Review Committee. ® Update on Long -Range Plan: Eric handed out copies of the current Long - Range Plan. The board discussed waiting until next month to decide how they wanted to proceed with updating the current plan. • Changing day and time of monthly meeting: Linda asked the attending board members to consider dates and times that maybe more convenient Eric noted that the meetings were generally held in the evenings due to some board members' employment. Linda decided to wait until the October meeting, with all members in attendance, to discuss any possible changes. Chairperson Linda Nix adjourned the meeting at 7:05 PM.
