HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_12.14.2009Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board Of Georgetown, Texas December 14, 2009 MEMBERS IN ATTENDENCE: Betty Ann Sensabaugh, Glenn Mautner, Shana Nichols, Marisue Miller, Anjeanette Courtin, David Ciambrone and Kathryn Morehouse. ABSENT: None STAFF IN ATTENDENCE Eric Lashley, Library Director OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE: Linda Nix (CTLS Lay Representative) MINUTES. The meeting was called to order by Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh at 6:30 PM David Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the November 2009 Library Advisory Board Meeting and Shana Nichols seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation continued to increase for the month of November by approximately 5 000 items. This was due in large part by the opening of the library the Saturday and Sunday following the Thanksgiving holiday. Patron visits were also up by approximately 2,000 visitors Eric also announced volunteerism was up for the month of November. Eric announced members of the Friends helped decorate the library for the holiday seasons Glenn Mautner donated a Christmas tree which has been placed on the second floor. The Friends also gave each member of the library staff a gift card to be used at the Red Poppy Coffee Company. Eric made known that Glenn Mautner and he attended the November board meeting of the Friends to discuss having criminal background checks done for the volunteers of the Friends. After some discussion the Friends agreed to require a criminal background check and formed a committee to draft a letter to the volunteers. Director Lashley announced the library installed additional electrical outlets in the lobby and circulation area to accommodate the additional holiday decorations. During this time the library also installed display case lights in the display case closest to the children's room. Eric reported the library would have a number of music programs during the holidays and that the annual gingerbread house competition was going on in the lobby of the library. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING- ■ Introduction of a library staff member - Eric Lashley: No staff member was available to attend the meeting. • Introduction of a board member - Betty Sensabaugh: Since all board members had the opportunity of introducing themselves over the past year, Betty Ann asked Eric to introduce himself. Eric grew up in Danville, Virginia. Danville s claim to fame was that it was the last capital of the Confederacy and was the former home of Dan River Mills textiles Enc said the town was a dying town and that the old mill structures were being torn down to sell the old bricks Eric received his undergraduate degree at Radford University and a Master's degree in Political Science at Virginia Tech and his Master's degree in Library Science at the University of Texas Eric is married and has two children; Berkeley age 9 and Ellie age 7. • Hill Country Book Festival - Eric Lashley- Eric reported that the attendance was small for the Book Festival event held on November 14. The Festival managers did arrange for the clean-up after the event. Many of the author talks were only attended by volunteers and a panel discussion that included 10 panelists only had 5 people in attendance. After some discussion, it was determined that the Arts and Culture Board should have the Library Advisory Board make a recommendation in regards to allowing the event to be held in the library in the future. ▪ CTLS news - Linda Nix: Linda reported that she attended the CTLS Mobile Library conference which was held at our library on December 11. Linda enjoyed the conference and distributed statistics concerning cell phone usage as well as the explosion of texting. Linda attended 4 events that dealt with technology. The presenters were Rachel Vacek, Joe Murphy, and Sarah Houghton -Jan. The major theme of the conference was that the speed by which technologies change requires libraries to adapt in non-traditional ways in order to better serve patrons' needs and demands. ▪ Life-long Learning Coalition - Eric Lashley" Eric announced that the library was asked to participate on a committee established between the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and GISD to improve education in Georgetown. The goal of Eric's subcommittee is to establish a vision for lifelong learning in Georgetown. After doing some research, Eric found that Bloomington, Indiana had established a lifelong learning coalition and he has contacted them for more information Eric distributed a reprint of the web page of the Bloomington Lifelong Learning Coalition.
